My starting assumption is that we’re nowhere near what’s achievable in terms of human development.

Learning itself, whether in individuals over their lifespan, organizations, or any social system, is under-theorized and not systematized.  In general I think you could argue that humanity generally has a low to middling commitment to continuously updating their information and understanding.  Learning itself, as a fundamental value and practice, is usually not identified as such.

Reason, a complex subject that goes way beyond principles of logic, is and always has been in short supply.  To paraphrase sci-fi author William Gibson, the Enlightenment is already here, but it’s unevenly distributed.  We’re probably centuries off from the point where a high degree of proficiency in critical thought is the norm and not the odd-looking exception.  Complex problems call for complex minds and thinking.  It’s impossible to see the state of the world and deduce that it’s the product of high quality thinking.  Just the opposite. 

Textual literacy–studies indicate that what’s considered to be a high level of literacy is smaller than the number of college grads.  About half of the population is barely literate.  

You could extend this list of mental capability assessments quite a ways, but my point is only to sketch out the basic claim that we’re not collectively as smart as we think we are.  (Does anyone really have a high regard for our species at this point in time?)  We’re arguably far below the level of mental and social development we need to achieve higher levels of well-being and solve our problems.

Enter Donald Jr.

Against the backdrop of the above realities about our systemic underdevelopment individually and socially, comes this voice of ignorance.  This is the face of barbarism full stop.  Trump Jr, and certainly daddy Drumpf, is what civilization should be designed to avoid.

Don Jr. isn’t just attacking teachers–this is a surface target, and no doubt Jr. can’t go further than this.  What’s he’s really attacking is the life of the mind itself, its freedom to inquire, doubt and challenge, its individuality, it’s ability to self-fashion and grow.

It would surprise the hell out of me if Don Jr. has ever bothered to contemplate any of the above.  Certainly there’s nothing in his public persona, at least that I’ve seen, that would indicate anything other than a debilitating smallness of mind.

How we should learn literature

I hate the way we learn literature at my world-class french university. I don’t understand why we have to learn Art this way.

It saddens me!!!! The way we are all arranged in straight rows, sitting quietly, listening patiently, typing obediently. Trying to stay awake. Why are we noting so neatly these interpretations the professor is making about Voltaire’s “le livre blanc”???

THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE WAY WE LEARN A SATIRICAL PIECE BY VOLTAIRE!!!! THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE WAY WE LEARN ART!!!!

How should we learn Micromegas? By standing freely around the class. Sitting in a scattered fashion. Talking passionately – every one of us, as if no one besides our own free souls are listening – about our own interpretations of the text! 

I want to see us, DISCUSSING without care, SHARING without scruples, EXPRESSING without rational control, OUR OWN interpretations of le livre blanc. POURING out our most innate opinions about the piece. And about the origins of everything else in the world.

The way we should learn art is by responding to it with our souls. In the most personal ways. By laughing, chanting, screaming, feeling.   By trying our utmost, doing all we can TO MAKE OTHERS smile, shiver, laugh, cry, scream, feel.

I think my grand parents were very smart individuals. My grandfather chose to buy a house near the freeway in a residential neighborhood. A nice sized three bedroom family home with a big backyard& room for expansion. The smartest thing was purchasing a house that they could afford to keep updating over the years. My grandparents kept their house up really well until their passing❤️

When your professor forces you to do something probably illegal by threatening to fail you, then when the man in charge asks about said illegal action, my professor throws me under the bus like it wasn’t all his doing to begin with.

I was told to begin meeting with my students or I’d fail. I was also told that I wasn’t allowed to meet with any students until after my paperwork was approved. The head of my approval committee emailed that he was informed I had already began meeting with my students even though my form wasn’t approved yet. I emailed my personal professor first and asked what to answer with. He said, “i think you need to meet with him in person to discuss this.” Aka. I’m not taking any of this blame or gonna help you through it.

What did I do?

I emailed the head of the committee, “I have indeed met with my students once, as requested by my professor (insert name here.)”

Like. If that was wrong, it’s not my fault. I was following the direction of the man responsible for giving me grades. The same man who forced me to change my major to something that’s forced me to spend 5 years so far on my undergrad with no end in sight. The same man who makes fun of counseling. The same man who ridicules students in front of each other. The same man who, dispite having a whole class consistently fail his tests, doesn’t change a thing to help. The same man who has insulted me, wasted 5 years of my life, and forced me into a degree that I DIDN’T WANT, but WONT HELP ME ACHIEVE MY CAREER GOALS.

I’m just so tired of this. Why try? Why keep going at all?
