The first lookbook of the 1930s! Rubens's clothes are simple and he prefers to wear a hat to almost every occasion. If he were better off, he would dress up more but because of his financial situation he rather use his money for something more necessary than to spend it on clothes.

One day Ruben came home from the neighboring town much later than usual. Esther grew worried and nervously awaited his arrival, but when he returned it turned out he had good news to share.
"I have great news," he said and couldn't hold back his excitement. "An old man who works as a carpenter took pity on me and offered me a job as his apprentice. It's not much pay, but at least it's something."
Esther could hardly believe it. After years of hardly getting by, Ruben finally had a job. With great relief she celebrated with her husband in the living room. This would certainly make things much easier for them in the future.
Later in the evening when all the children were asleep, they lay in bed together. The house was completely quiet for once and they both felt at peace and optimistic about the future.
"I have news to tell you as well," Esther said and looked up at Ruben. "I'm pregnant again."
The couple united in a kiss and this time another child just felt like a blessing without any of the previous worries that had weighed on them.

Norma had really started to enjoy school. Although it was only a small village school, she loved going there every day and stood out among the other students as she often knew the answers to the questions the teacher asked. She loved to learn new things about the world and particularly excelled in English and History.
Norma's only friend was a boy named Warren whose mother worked in the general store. They had met one time before when they were toddlers and now they walked together to school every morning and she appreciated having someone her age to talk to.
When she got home from school she immediately did her homework so she could spend the rest of the day taking care of her little brothers with her grandmother Frances. It wasn't as much fun as being at school, but she still enjoyed spending time with them.

In the coming month, a blanket of snow settled over Moonwood Mill. It was the first snowfall the Scholl family experienced in their new house. The crops went into dormancy and there were suddenly not as many chores that had to be done.
The house was drafty and cold so they used the fireplace to the highest capacity. As winter became more prominent, it was difficult to be outdoors. Mostly, the family chose to stay in most of the time and tried to come up with different activities to keep the children busy. The living room quickly became the place where they spent most of their time - with the fire making it the warmest room in the house.

Bertie became a toddler. He was a gentle child and hadn't grown as much as the other siblings had at the same age. He kept close to his grandma and she always thought it a blessing to take care of him, as his soft and quiet demeanour was so different from his older brother.

The list of what needed to be done on the farm was always long and unattainable, especially when Ruben was away all day looking for work. Norma was not an issue - she always behaved in an exemplary manner. The boys, however, kept Esther busy all day with their shenanigans.
Most of the time she felt overwhelmed and fell asleep exhausted on a couch as soon as she sat down. She often found herself getting tired over the easiest tasks, probably because she never got any proper rest.
On such occasions, it was therefore fortunate that Frances was available. She didn't mind taking care of the children. On the contrary, she felt that she had a great responsibility for the upbringing of the children since she couldn't contribute to the household in any other way.

Esther's pregnancy was coming to an end and she was more than ready. She hated being tired and unproductive when there was so much that needed to be done and being pregnant didn't help in the slightest.
In the coming days, she went into labour and gave birth to their second son. The birth was without problems and they gave him the name Albert David Scholl. He was a small child with a head full of blonde locks.
A few hours after the birth Esther and Ruben brought the newborn into the living room to let Norma and Billy meet their new sibling. He was so tiny that Norma refused to hold him since she was afraid to break him. Instead, she and Billy gave him the nickname Bertie and it quickly stuck.

Norma grew up quickly and soon entered childhood. Since she was a proper and responsible child, she looked forward to being able to help out on the farm properly. She took all of her chores very seriously because she was aware of how hard her parents struggled every day and wanted nothing more than to help them out and hopefully ease their burden.

One day Esther decided to bring the children with her to the general store to buy some produce. Otherwise, they mostly roamed around on the farm all day doing nothing. She thought it would be good for them to change their environment and perhaps even meet some new people.
The store was run by a woman named Sue. She turned out to be delightful and she and Esther got talking for quite a while. It turned out that she was a single mother to a boy of Norma's age. Although the Scholl family had lived in Moonwood for quite some time, Esther hadn't had time to get to know the other residents and she was pleased to finally turn things around.
Because of that, Norma had not met any other children other than her brother and was therefore curious about the boy. He also seemed shy, hiding behind his mother's skirt but in time, she hoped they could become good friends.

One day, Esther asked to speak to Ruben. Something had been weighing on her mind recently and she was finally ready to open up to her husband.
"I'm pregnant again," she announced and for the first time, the thought of a pregnancy didn't bring them immediate joy.
Even though the harvest had been good, another child would put a strain on their savings and Rubens's unemployment didn't help the situation. Several years had passed without him being able to get a job and he felt ashamed of not being able to contribute to his constantly growing family.
The fact that they would soon have another mouth to feed made Ruben decisive and he decided to try his luck elsewhere. The next day, he got dressed in his finest suit and took the train an hour away to the larger neighbouring town of Copperdale.
Despite spending the whole day asking around, he did not succeed. There seemed to be no work for him here, not even with a low revenue. But it wasn't only Ruben who roamed the street. As the hours passed he noticed other men asking the same question as him and understood that more families than his own were affected by the recession.
With each rejection he got, Ruben became more discouraged. He knew that it would be difficult to get a job, but not this difficult. Even though he felt disheartened he didn't want to give up so easily and decided to continue to visit Copperdale every morning and be the first in line if any position would open up.

A few days after the birth, Norma got to meet her little brother Billy for the first time. She was immediately fascinated by him, especially since she hadn't met any other children this small before. From now on she was no longer the youngest.
There were now four members in the Scholl family. They still didn't have much money at their disposal, but the fall harvest had been satisfactory and they had high hopes of at least making it through the winter months.

As Esther could no longer be as active because of the pregnancy, Norma spent most of her time with Ruben and soon they were inseparable. She showed great interest in the animals on the farm and she especially loved it when her father let her participate in the daily chores even though she was too small to help out for real.
Esther struggled with her pregnancy. She hated that her body wouldn't allow her to work like before, but of course, knew that it would all be worth it when the baby finally arrived.
And finally, one autumn night Esther went into labour. The birth was uncomplicated and soon she welcomed a little boy into the world. She and Ruben decided that his name would be Bill Howard Scholl, but it didn't take long before they started calling him Billy for short.
