GupShup Cup: Physical Prototype

We used this physical prototype to assess any change in ergonomics because of the addition of the tech to a regular cup.

OurSolution: The GupShup Cup.

The Elderly can have a conversation using these cups within a group of 6 or less. We thought of this cup as a way to simulate the conversation people used to have over a cup of tea/coffee in the pre-covid world. After the Pandemic began elderly were affected the most because of the isolation.

Working:

Any elderly having six friends/relatives or less can buy a set of this cup. Each set contains 6 cups. Each cup has its own identity color at the bottom area above the rim lights.

Now suppose I am an elderly with a blue gupshup cup. I have 5 others friends who also have same cup with different colors. We used to have a conversation over chai at 5 pm before covid. So what I do is at around 5 pm i fill up my cup of chai and press the button on the cup handle. Now what happens is as i press the button all my friends get a beep sound notification through the speaker of the cup and the rim light turns blue indicating to all, that the person with blue cup wants to have a conversation. Now say, person with the red cup is interested to join the conversation so he/she presses the one button on his/her cup and gets instantly connected to the blue cup. As an indication of this both red and blue vertical strip lights up for both these mugs. Now say, their other friend with orange cup joins the conversation then the red, blue and orange strips lights up for all three of them indicating their established connection.

This article pretty much sums up the problem we are trying to solve i.e. the covid situation has made the elderly feel very lonely.

Next, we began brainstorming in our chosen space - social isolation among elderly, keeping in mind the constraints we set in design brief (low tech, easily adaptible, for semi-urban/ urban older people). Some of snaps of the same :

Designing Design Brief

From the areas we discussed previously we chose Social Isolation Among Elderly as our area of interest. We chose this because we felt elders and their problems are not given enough attention. 

(aaah the happy pre-covid times!)

Then we started to define our design brief more precisely :

Adapting to the new normal - Brainhurricaning :D

Covid-19 has changed very fundamental ways of learning and interacting. We wanted to explore areas in which we could think about helping people adapt to the new ways of living.

These are few areas that emerged :

1. Learning for small kids that is more interactive and movement oriented and not limited to sitting and watching videos. Kids by their very nature cannot keep still. They need to move and we need to use this tendency to teach them.

2. Blind People who relied on touching and feeling surfaces for reading (lift buttons, packaging etc) and for navigating through spaces, are now more cripplied as touching surfaces is dangerous and to be avoided at all costs in covid times.

3. Students faced huge issues in covid times not only while learning but also in evaluation. Ensring fair and smooth evaluation/ examination system is a huge challenge.

4. Elderly people rely heavily on community relationships for human interactions because younger people in the family may be far away in other cities or countries (for work/education), or they might simply be busy. Since covid, since people cannot step out of their homes and gather, they are feeling ever more isolated. Learning technology is a humongous challenge for them.
