Common Mistakes To Avoid While Brushing Teeth
Tumblr media
Toothbrushing has become so habitual in our lives that we hardly ever put any thoughts while doing it. However, doing it right is the key to a healthy mouth. Brushing your teeth properly can improve your oral health and prevent any dental problems such as gum disease and cavities.
The following are some of the common mistakes that one makes and tips on how to avoid them while brushing teeth.
Choosing the right toothbrush: Just any other toothbrush may not be the one for you. Choose the size of the toothbrush according to the size of your mouth. It should feel good in your mouth and in your hands. Do not go for a toothbrush with hard bristles because they can hurt your gums. You can go for either an electric toothbrush or a manual one as per your preference.
Give it time: Dentists recommends brushing at least twice a day. One brushing session should last at least 2 minutes. However, many people finish brushing well before the recommended time. Divide your mouth into 4 sections and to spend 30 seconds on each section to ensure that you brush for at least 2 minutes. Most of the electric toothbrushes have in-built timer, thereby making it easier to track time. Other methods include watching TV or listening to your favorite song while brushing your teeth.
Don’t be overly aggressive: It is not wise to brush more than thrice a day because it may wear down your teeth's enamel and damage your gum. Also, don't be too aggressive because it doesn't take too much force to remove plaque. Brush lightly for the recommended amount of time. If you are using an electric brush, simply guide the toothbrush and let the bristle do the work.
Perfect your technique: Wide, side-to-side strokes can damage your gum line. Instead, hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to your gum and make short strokes in an up-and-down motion. Brush the outer and inner surfaces of your teeth to ensure optimal cleaning. And do not forget to clean your tongue as well.
Mix things up: Starting from the same spot every time is not wise. By the time you reach the last area of your mouth, you may become bored and may not do a good job at cleaning. Be aware of what you are doing and where you have been to ensure that you cover all areas of your mouth. Change your starting point frequently so that you don't get lazy.
Choose products wisely: It is important to choose the right toothpaste. Teeth-whitening toothpaste can be harsh to your teeth and gum. Instead, go for the regular fluoride toothpaste. If you wish to whiten your teeth, you can switch between whitening toothpaste and regular.
Avoid brushing immediately after an acidic beverage: Beverages such as energy drinks, coffee, sodas, sour candies, even fruit juices contain acid which soften the tooth enamel. Do not brush immediately after having such beverages. Wait for at least 30 minutes before you brush in order to ensure that your saliva have enough time to restore your teeth enamel.
Know when to change the toothbrush: You should change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. If you notice that the bristles have lost their normal flexibility and if they start to break, it is time to get a new toothbrush. If you are unable to decide which toothbrush to buy, you can ask the best dentist in Chandigarh which kind is best for you.
