woke up today and couldn't stop thinking about anne and sprig's friendship; the fact that they're each other's first real healthy friendship; sprig defending anne, from wartwood and later on from sasha; anne seeing this funky, little pink frog and going 'yeah that's gonna be my baby bro now' - how they both just became family so easily, how sprig was the first plantar to adopt anne. just - they're siblings in every sense; the protectiveness, the bickering, the i'd die for you but i wouldn't share a room with you, the being there for each other through thick and thin.
i especially love the times we cut to the two of them simply hanging out, watching something on anne's phone or messing around together and accidently getting cursed .
and it's, like, they became so important to each other (all of the plantars did, really) so naturally. of course sprig was the one who got to ask anne about her mom. of course it was sprig who'd suspect marcy for anne's sake. of course it was anne who sprig chose to ask "Can you miss someone you never actually knew?". of course it was them against the world - both in amphibia and on earth.
and of course - of course - it was the thought of losing sprig that pushed anne into activating her powers, to their full extent, for the first time.
sprig had been her only constant - everyone else had changed and betrayed and hurt in some way, even in her very own frog family, hop pop had hurt her, too - but never sprig, her little brother and partner in crime.
and he really is her little brother - in Thai Feud he wanted to matter to the people who mattered to her. anyone with a younger sibling has had this experience, the little one always wanting to be a part of the older's life in any way, and sometimes it's a bit annoying but you know it's just because they love you and look up to you.
and amphibia is an amazing show with so, so many good things and characters and plot points and i love all of it - but at the end of the day - at least to me - it's sprig and anne's friendship that's truly the heart of the show, has been from the very start.
i love that when they were younger, max was always the sidekick, the first mate, but then the events of the first game happened and max was the one leading for once, the one protecting chloe. and chloe was totally okay with being part of “team max”, to be her “chauffeur and companion” and more instances.
that's how complex their bond is. they spent 5 years apart but they come back as if no time has passed. their friendship/relationship develops well and they constantly balance, help and call each other out when needed. i love them. they're the backbone of the childhood bffs to lovers trope.
