The BL novels with such excellent plot, that you are sad it has BL in it, otherwise you would force justĀ everyoneĀ to read it.
#1.Ā Ā The Earth is Online
Great Sci-fi novel with āalien interventionā theme. Usually such plots has big problems with endings, but The Earth is Online managed to get a nice wrap for this very difficult theme. High-passed and absolutely interesting.
What to expect: super smart MC, super sick brainteasers, unlimited flow, manly couple, twisted fairytales, uncommon special abilities.Ā
Warning: this novel has very weak romance line (you could probably just made it a friendship and almost nothing would be lost), but this is a great book nevertheless.
#2. Supernatural Movie Actor App
Best horror BL-novel I read. Every movie plot is stunning and quite uncommon and ingenious. Movies never has only one main theme - author interweave several into complex, deep, interestingĀ narration with unexpected reveals and explanations. The overall plot is great too - it is type of the book where everything mentioned have a reason and place in a plot. Absolutely superior read.
What to expect:Ā super smart MC (explained in the plot), great horror stories, quite a bit of gore, unlimited flow, love between two personas in multiple personality disorder (explained beautifully in the plot), mysteries solving, manly couple.
Warning: the BL part is rather small, but really warm and nice to read.
#3.Ā Mist
The plot is insane - it is very smart, atmospheric and has great ending. Also it has a really strong balance of the plot and romance. There is CONSENT! And respect! FINALLY! Seriously, when ML asks MC even before hugging and they actually have conversations - even without supreme plot I would already loved this novel to the moon and back. It really hard to say anything about this novel without spoilers - it is mind-blowing. Period.
What to expect: time agents,Ā time loops, time paradox, complex plot, a bit (?) of gore, smart MC, great couple, a bit of āfrom enemies to loversā mood.
Warning: expect to burn a lot of your braincells to understand the time loops.

Super, super late reply, but I was tagged by @variabels to list 5 anime/manga recs. Thanks for the tag! (I also love Durarara and Baccano ć¾(ā¢Ļā¢`)o)
Iām gonna list Chinese media in this list, though, because thatās what I consume more. And ha! How brave, asking an ND person like me for recs. Prepare to be bombarded by my rambling!
Starting off with the media currently featured in my header (excluding Blue Lock coz most of my mutuals already know that)...
1. The Earth is Online (danmei* novel)

* Danmei - Chinese boys love stories
The plot basically: Everyone on Earth is pulled into a death game.
A good intro to the unlimited flow* genre. Each instance is thrilling and complex. The boys love aspect is not much, as it focuses on plot, but itās definitely not subtle. The characters are also quite diverse. Most UF novels just focus on the Chinese characters and revolve around what happens in China, but this one actually features those from other countries. I also like how the protagonist isnāt treated as the entire worldās savior. Other people around the world are also doing their part.
* unlimited flow - Chinese genre of web novels where the protagonist is pulled into different instances to complete challenges which, if failed, would result in punishment or even death. Itās basically the death game genre, but instead of just one game, there are multiple.
2. Legend of Hei movie + Legend of Luo Xiaohei series sequel (donghua*)
(I downloaded this video from YouTube years ago. I can no longer find it there, so Iām reuploading it hereā¦)
* Donghua ā Chinese anime
A story about the young cat demon Xiao Hei and his quest to find a new home after humans destroyed his old one. Cute cat + cool powers + awesome fighting scenes + clean and crisp animation.
You can watch this on Netflix, but itās not available in all countries. Thereās an English and Japanese dub available, but I strongly recommend watching it in the original Chinese. (I can send you the full movie with English subtitles if you want). The series sequel can be watched on YouTube. S1 of the series is more slice of life, but s2 is action-packed.
3. Low Tide in Twilight (BL manhwa)
That BL trope where the bottom has a mountainload of debt, while the top gives him a way outā¦ except, not really, coz the male lead Taeju is partly the creditor, and heās forcing Euihyun into a relationship with him in exchange for money.
Typical BL story with an initially toxic couple, but better. Complex characters, and a manhwa that relies more on the art to tell the story instead of the words. Also, Taeju gives off that same annoying but hot vibe as Kaiser. What more do you want?
4. Link Click (donghua)

The title (ę¶å
代ēäŗŗ) would be literally translated as āTime Agents.ā I have no idea why the official English title is Link Click.
The plot basically: Two guys with time-related powers run a photography shop, where they accept orders from clients to dive back in time through a photo.
Funimation did this donghua so dirty by not promoting it more back when it aired in 2021. The English subs were also terrible.
Did you know that it used to rank #20 in MAL, surpassing MP 100 S2, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other mainstream anime? Now, itās ranked #41 on MAL, lower than before, but still pretty high for a donghua on MAL. Thatās just how good it is.
Hereās a link to the blu-ray version with fansubs. Just pick the normal English track option and not English (CR).
5. White Cat Legend 2020 (donghua)

Title (大ēåÆŗę„åæ) would be literally translated as The Journal of Dali Court.
Another cat boy donghua! Can you tell I just love cats?
The plot: Chen Shi travels from the countryside to the big city to search for his missing brother and inadvertently ends up working at Dali court under the cat guy Li Bing.
Slice of Life + Comedy + Drama + Supernatural + Mystery + Action
The animation is also really smooth in this one! You can watch it on YouTube. Here's a link to episode 1.

To get one thing out the way, he's quite harsh about 1) Jin Ling not getting hurt, 2) Jin Ling being seen as presenting up to sect heir standards. Normal gentry priorities -- but otherwise, I love that he's just a Wronged and Suffering Mother.
Oh Jin Ling, you finally remember jiujiu do you? Did you think of jiujiu when you ran off? Did you think about his poor heart? No, you only think about yourself!
And JL responds with the side of him that must come from JGY: Of course I did! I barely ate as I thought only of jiujiu!
JC: hmph you don't look the least bit contrite! You probably ate the normal amount, stuffed your face while your jiujiu worried himself sick.
Then the contrast between these scenes - why discipline someone else's kid when you can shame their guardian instead? As one should.
(On a side note, I love the way JL just fucks with Jiang Cheng 24/7 - talking back, roasting his personality, straight up fake news about Wen Ning. I mean, WWX and JC were pretty sassy kids, but can you imagine them trying to pull any of this on YZY? There's this whole sense of Jin Ling gets to be naughty because he's safe to be naughty and that's pretty cool.)

Lan Qiren modern AU fosters cats. He does not keep them. They are not HIS pets. But he fosters them constantly. Like. Kitten season is absolutely chaos at the main family house. Lan Xichen stopped asking to keep them around 8 cause he realized he was always a little relieved when the house was quiet, but Lan Wangji never really wanted one for himself at all. But. Lan Qiren proves himself a liar several times when heās got a grumpy old cat in the manor all rubbing up on him and grooming his kids and heās all āoh. Okay. We can keep that oneā and keeps fostering others. Just. Also. Now the kittens will have grumpy old uncles to check on them as they play too.
His fostering system also goes out the window when Lan Wangji comes home with a kid who Wangji found with a scraped knee at the park (the park across the street, and even tho Uncle is directly outside in the garden watching you, do not mean you should cross the street with someone elseās kid, A-Zhan, what if they think Uncle uses you to lure children inside????) and Lan Qiren notices that for some reason they have Jiejie Yanli (who Wei Wuxian has kindly pointed out) watching over an entire childrenās birthday party by herself with no help. Oooof.
So. He gathers the kids up, grabs Xichen from the sitting room where heās practicing his xiao, and take them back to the party. Yanli is DEVASTATED when she realizes that not only is an adult (sheās only like 13 okay this burden should NOT have come on her) coming to correct her, but her precious baby brother has made it all the way across the street with a stranger while she wasnāt looking???
Lan Qiren has managed to wrangle all the kids together within 5 minutes, gotten several booboos bandaged and asked Yanli to pass out some small snacks to keep them busy for a minute. Just in time for Xichen to come back from across the street in another direction, with the Nie brothers. This is actually helpful for once cause Mingjue is 16 (wow. So. Big.) and NHS comes with crafting supplies at all times.
It might end up messier than usual, but even the birthday boy Jiang Cheng, was getting overwhelmed and upset in the party before. Now heās making friends with the pretty boy DaGe brought to play with them, and Yanli is finally no longer panicking, so both the brothers can calm down. Wangji is married now, obviously. They will adopts many babies and play house all the time. Before they were sorta trying to wrangle the other kids themselves which lead to A-Ying getting pushed down, and A-Cheng getting into some fights.
Qiren sits Yanli down and explains to her that heās not mad at her, heās not even disappointed in her. Heās disappointed in her mother who thought it would be a good idea to put someone with such little life experience in charge of a party of 10-15 kiddos. Even he called Xichen to go get his older friend up the street for backup instead of doing that alone. He also gives her a hug. Xichen likes hugs, and heās an affectionate kiddo, and the kittens have prepared Qiren well. She is very happy and notes down their house mentally as a trusted adult who can help, or probably knows someone who can.
Lan Qiren may be an expert kitten fosterer, which means heās ready to storm the chaos and turn it into a bundle of fluffā¦ but even he wasnāt quite ready for his nephewās husband to move in with them with a baby at 20. At least heās prepared. Life is funny sometimes.

I feel like due to mom-trauma in a modern au that Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji would be in contact with each other weekly if not daily, no matter what. If it goes longer than a week without hearing from each other they both get a little antsy and Lan Wangji will straight up panic if it goes longer than two weeks and Xichen wonāt answer his calls (tragedy of a broken phone and no memorized phone numbers and Wangjiās refusal to get social media)
Theyāre both appalled to find out that WWX and JC will go months without speaking and then just show up at each otherās house with nothing more than a āyou up?ā Text. Xichen is less so, because he gets that not everyone is as close as he and Wangji. Wangji however is extra confused because the only other brother relationship heās seen is Huaisang ans Mingjue and they call each other daily even when theyāre both hella busy atleast for a few minutes.
