Thoughts
I didn't do any research about the local music industry prior to leaving the corporate world to do music full time. What I had thought to be a very glamorous industry turned out to be a total opposite of reality. I'll admit that I was silly, it was definitely an impulsive decision but I have 0 regrets about it. However, if I could turn back time, I'd like to have done more research and be better prepared before resigning.
MY MINDSET A YEAR AGO:
 1) Okay no thank you to singing at bars/bistros. I don't like the rowdy atmosphere and I hate covering radio hits.

2) Why do bands want to do bar gigs when you can get so much more from weddings? Maybe if I ever decide to sing at bars, I’ll be a game-changer and get them to pay me what I’m worth.

 3) I don’t think I’m that bad therefore I can charge more than your average weddings bands.

 4) I’ll secure myself one wedding per week. Aiya should be easy right? There are people getting married everyday.
5) With my one guitarist friend, we can take the world by storm.

6) Upload youtube videos on a regular basis but doing what I like or feel like singing.

 7) I’ll do lots of collaborations with people (recordings, produce songs together etc). Grab whatever I can get. This means exposurEEE!

WHAT I’M DOING NOW & WHAT I’VE LEARNT

 1) I’m currently a resident singer at a bistro/bar and doing subs occasionally. The hard truth is everyone has to start there whether you like it or not.

2) Average bar rate is pretty much fixed. So if I’m going to be cocky and reject the offer because the pay is not up to my expectation, then some other lucky band gets the job.

3) Unfortunately, it’ll be my loss if I charge high for weddings because most couples are only willing to pay X amount. Some other band would gladly accept a wedding at X amount if I don’t. It’s very competitive.

4) Securing weddings isn’t that simple because I’m a nobody and being a nobody means how would anyone know that Cheryl Loon exists? It’s a very slow process getting my name out there in the market but there is definitely progress from when I first started. I’m very happy.
5) In the music world, keep your options open by working with other musicians in the scene. No thank you to monogamy.

6) What I like singing/covering may not be what everyone wants to hear. I now try cover both the songs I feel like singing and what my audience wants to hear. yup

Missing the awesome music made in the 90s. The stuff you hear on the radio now don’t even come close. Hope you like my cover of Teardrop by Massive Attack  More updates here: www.youtube.com/loonsmusic www.fb.com/loonsmusic IG @ cheryloon

Been trying to eat healthy for about 9 months now - cutting down on processed food, soft drinks and throwing in more fruits to my diet. I’m doing great but mama is no happy :( Mama: “You can have the Sambal Sardine that I prepared earlier” Me: “It’s alright, I don’t feel like having that for dinner” Mama: “You don’t eat my cooking anymore, so sad. I prepared all these dishes for you all and you don’t want to eat them.” :S
