it's misleading imo to say that the covid pandemic has contributed to 'mistrust in institutions' writ large because what we actually see is mistrust in a handful of specific institutions without much overarching analysis or critique of what makes institutions untrustworthy, which is evidenced by the number of people who are (rightfully) dubious of political claims made by capitalist state public health agencies but are still credulously passing around tabloid articles, claims made by fringe practitioners funded by massive interest groups, etc, as though such sources are magically free of the exact same problems that make institutions sclerotic and propagandistic
