Caroline talks, while Liz looks overwhelmed, near tears. Caroline tells her she "explained [the supernatural] to [Liz] once", but she had to compel her to forget because she was scared of what Liz might do about it. Caroline starts walking towards Liz, who stays in place but leans her body away. Caroline tells her she doesn't want to lie, and states that she's not going to be afraid of Liz anymore. Caroline grabs Liz's closed fist and holds it in her hands, saying she doesn't want Liz to be afraid of her either. Liz shakes her head imperceptibly, holding back tears and a sob; Caroine tells her, her voice cracking, "I'm still your little girl. It's me.", hugging Liz. She repeats "It's me. Mom?", and Liz finally hugs back, crying on Caroline's shoulder, who smiles with relief and hugs her tight.]

"I made a list... of all the things that I've done since I fell for you. It started last summer when you moved away. I started obsessing over where you were, wondering why you weren't returning my calls. I told you I hated you when I felt ignored, missing my mom's final moments because I was kissing you. and then she died... And it affected me so deeply that I did the worst possible thing a vampire can do: I turned off my humanity. And when I thought I couldn't do anything else, I got you to turn off yours."

When Stefan offers forgiveness before Jo's wedding, Caroline tells Caroline that the old Caroline wouldn't have forgiven herself, she'd smacked her and asked what the hell she's doing, adding that she hates the way that "this" has made her feel. Stefan, with a pleading demeanor, says that it's because she's a control freak who lost control: that he feels the same way around her, because that's what falling for someone is: being vulnerable, losing control. During his speech he's joined his hand with her on her lap; Caroline looks down and smiles, caressing his hand with her other one. She says "I know..." but that where she is in her life, with the guilt and grief, control is all she has, and she's not ready to give that up. Caroline stands up, and walks away.]

Caroline, rushes to grab Stefan, ordering him to show her the vision of her mother again, saying she wants to see her and needs to know what she said in the later. Stefan, pained, resting against the window, remorsefully tells her he already gave her the letter. Caroline, distressed, repeats “No.”, rushing to the letters ashes, while Stefan looks at her with compassion, tearfully. Caroline, choked up, asks what is it he thinks Liz wanted to tell her, ,and Stefan replies that whatever it was, is gone. Caroline starts sobbing, collapsing on the floor, saying she “did this”, that it’s all her fault. As her emotions come back in, she frantically lists the worst of the recent events (“I tried to kill you. And then I made you turn it off. And then we- Oh, my God!”), covering her face with her hands in despair. Stefan tells her “it’s okay” trying to comfort her; she apologises, and starts saying “I ruined everything, I ruined everything.”, sobbing.]

STACKEDIARIES | april 23rd | “because”

[Caption: gifs from The Vampire Diaries. They show a memory between Stefan and Liz, with potent light and a dream-like quality, that he puts in Caroline’s head. After Liz has walked him out of the door, Caroline rushes towards it, having it closed in front of her face while she tells her mother to wait. Liz can’t hear her, and walks away holding a letter she’s written for Caroline, to reach her after Liz’s death. From the other side of the glass on her door, partially covered by the lace curtains, Caroline tries to make Liz hear her, frantically telling her that it’s Caroline, to just come outside, that she wants to talk to her, while Liz walks further into the house. Caroline smiles as she sobs, saying she wants to read Liz’s letter, and continues to beg her to open the door, to come back. She turns around and, now talking to Stefan, orders him to “Make her come back.”, and the scene fades to white.]

“When did you turn it back?”

[Caption: gifs from The Vampire Diaries. Caroline, looking pale and exhausted from blood loss, stands in front of Stefan while he sits on the bed, in the bed and breakfast’s room. She wraps her jacket around his shoulders, pulling on it, and asks “What’s wrong? What, you don’t wanna take advantage of me? You don’t wanna ruin our non-existent relationship?” in a mocking tone. During her questions she gets closer to Stefan, invading his space; he’s averted his eyes, until he looks straight up at her and says “Please, stop.” Caroline gets on eye level with him and tells him to relax, saying she doesn’t “really feel like kissing anymore” in an airy tone. Then she quickly uses her jacket to snap his neck, making him fall unconscious on the blood-stained bed. She walks away after throwing him a smug, derisive look, puts on her jacket, and starts making great effort to kick down the reinforced door. Once she manages, she walks away decisevily, in slow motion. Later it’s discovered this scene is the result of Stefan using his powers to get inside Caroline’s head.]

He takes his hand to his chest, pained, and she smiles, cold. When he asks what’s happening Stefan, annoyed, says that Caroline is cheating, and she rolls her eyes. He asks for help and Stefan tells him to relax, that it’s all in his head. Caroline scalates, telling him his throat is tightening, mimicing it in mockery. She tells him he can’t breathe and he collapses, falling on the floor; she adds, gleeful, “Oh, my God! Are those spiders all over your body?”, freaking him out more. Stefan throws his hands up in frustration while she grins; the bartender finally dies. Caroline, smug, says “Look at that. I won. Poor died was so scared he died of a heart attack.” Stefan complains, half-heartedly, saying that it wasn’t fair and he technically died of a loophole. Caroline turns around to tell him “A win is a win.”]

Caroline tells Elena that Bonnie doesn’t want to see her; that it’s going to be a hard few days for them and that if Bonnie needs some time to deal, Elena should give it to her. Elena insists, saying Bonnie’s always been there for her and to let her do the same; Caroline apologizes but stays firm. Gentle, she asks Elena to put herself in Bonnie’s shoes: what happened to Abby was to save Elena. Caroline says “And that’s okay, because she loves you. So much. But somehow [Bonnie’s always the one who gets hurt.”

In the second scene, Caroline catches Abby writing a goodbye letter; Abby says she doesn’t “know how to do this”. Caroline asks if she meant being a vampire or a parent, saying she can help with the first, by teaching her self-control, but being a parent is all on Abby. She tells her that she run away once and Bonnie grew up without a mother, and that now that she has an eternity to make up for it, Abby’s throwing it away. Choked up, she insists Bonnie’s better off without her; Caroline, emotional, says no one is better off without their parents. She says that Bonnie wants to make this work for them, and begs Abby, “Please. Just stay.”

On the last scene, after Enzo is killed by Stefan, Bonnie opens the door to find her mother on the other side. Hesitant, with averting and tentatively meeting their eyes, Abby tells her that Caroline called her and told her what happened. Abby says she’s sorry, and that Caroline told her Bonnie doesn’t want to talk to her, but that Caroline hoped she’d want to talk to Abby. After a moment, Bonnie walks through the doorway and hugs her mother tight. Abby closes her eyes, starting to fall off, and Bonnie closes hers and the breath she was holding.]

On the left, Damon is distracting Elena on the phone while she’s infected and walking around in a straight line out of boredom. In a conspiratorial tone, he asks if she’s heard the gossip, and when she inquires, he replies “Caroline and an Original hybrid, sitting in a tree.”. This stops Elena in her tracks, as she releases a shocked “No.” Smiling with incredulity and amusement, she asks “Are you serious? Caroline and Klaus? I mean-” and Damon assents. Elena stops in her tracks and says “Wait. Does Tyler know about this?” and Damon tells her that he does, asking her to guess who told him. Elena guesses it was Katherine, and furious, she says “Katherine is such a bitch.”]
