Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway Review: B-
I have recently saw the broadway retool of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I have MUCH to say about this production. NOTE: I viewed this production as a video donated to me from a friend so it is probably more epic in person, but I still have quite a few points to make.
The Good:
THE ACTING IS FANTASTIC The cast, especially Christian Borle and Jackie Hoffman, present great acting.
THERE ARE TONS OF FUNNY MOMENTS The crowd will be filled with laughter, I gurantee it. Also, Augustus Gloop is a hoot.
THE CAST ALL HAVE GREAT VOICES AND SKILLS Great voices and great dancers. Trista Dollision (Violet) presents great high pitch voicing, and Emma Pfaeffle (Veruca) is a very elegant dancer.
The Mutual:
THE SPECIAL EFFECTS: Some of the effects are good, such as Mike Teavee’s demise. Others are horrible and cringey, such as Violet’s inflation and Augustus’ downfall.
The Bad:
IT IS CREEPY. The weak children will have nightmares. Veruca is viciously attacked by crazed squirrels who drag her down and rip her head and limbs off. Luckily, Veruca has been replaced by a mannequin, but it is just not enough to make this scene child friendly.
THE SETS ARE MEDIOCRE. The Maze of Deadly Traps room is nothing but a blue box and a door. Mike Teavee gets pummeled by invisible traps, but this empty room is far from funny. A few more props would be nice.
Conclusion:
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed the show, but I warn that individuals who do not have the love of the story may wonder why they paid so much money for premium seats for this show.
Also the Oompa Loompa’s wigs are weird.

15 Things Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Did Right on the West End
It’s the end of the West End for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was once a potential-flop with mixed reviews but has become a record-breaking hit. But now, the show is closing its chocolate covered gates to prepare for Broadway. But many changes, including the four bad children being played by adults and new songs (”The View from Here,” “The Candy Man,” and potentially “the Queen of Pop”). But let’s remember the original, directed by Sam Mendes, which will change in NYC for better or worse.
15. The Gate
It’ll give you a headache if you try to count all the letters in the gate, but it just displays magic, pulling the audience away from the world they know into the dazzling second Act.
14. Mrs. Teavee
Originally played by Iris Roberts, Mike Teavee’s wreck of a mother offers a humorous performance which delights all audiences.
13. Veruca’s Nutcracker Sweet
Though this song has no chorus, it combines a new set with a new take of Wonka’s squirrel army in a fast-paced and colorful farewell to the Veruca Salt and her father.
12. Auf Wiedersehen, Augustus Gloop
First, Augustus falls into the pool of chocolate, then sucked up a transparent pipe just like the source material. But then the flow is diverted and Oompa Loompas descend with Augustus being dragged through the pipe below. With an unexpected set change, this musical number is a delightful tribute to the greedy Augustus Gloop.
11. The Oompa-Loompas
Every costume is different, each with an unexpected illusion which makes the Oompa Loompas seem shorter than the adults which portray them.
10. Veruca Salt
She’s just as rotten as in the book and films, but this time she’s cute as a button yet as foul as a piece of trash.
9. Mike Teavee
Short, cute, and violent as hell. Mike’s a crazed techno-terrorist with a bullet in for the prize.
8. Vidiots!
Mike’s traveling through cyberspace and this time Mrs. Teavee and Mr. Wonka join the rodeo! Techno music has never had such a good moral.
7. Violet Beauregarde
Selfish but a star. Crass but a winner. But soon this Gum-Chewing Celebrity will get her just desserts.
6. Juicy!
This is a new take on Violet’s demise, with smart costume design and a purple disco ball, which is actually Violet. Everybody knows about JUICY!
5. Augustus Gloop
Augustus has got even more lovable in this musical adaption. So much that you actually pity him as the is sucked through the pipe in his demise. We’ll miss you, Gloop.
4. The TV Set
One of the marvels which gave Mark Thompson the WhatsonStage.com award for Best Set Designer, the Bucket’s newly repaired television is a visual delight for the London audience.
3. The Great Glass Elevator
Though it was not present in the production’s previews, the Great Glass Elevator was a welcome addition to the musical as it flew over the audience during the premier.
2. Willy Wonka
Many actors came and went after Douglas Hodge was recast, but each is as dark and ominous yet silly and optimistic as Wonka should be. “It Must Be Believed to be Seen!” -Willy Wonka
1. The Chocolate Room
The most beloved room in the factory just got a stage makeover, but the scene is still as magical as ever.

Saw School of Rock on Broadway. Recommended to anyone who's visiting NYC!!! Family Friendliness: 7/10 Some inappropriate references, but only if you pay extreme amounts of attention to the musical numbers. Most children will not understand it, though.
