Barnabas' entire character arc may appear to be centered around faith on the surface, but it's really about the unspoken bond he shared with his mother – presumably his only parent.
She's described as "strict," but strict doesn't necessarily translate to "unkind" or "abusive." It reads to me as meaning that she had a set of standards that she wanted to hold her son to, and that he was expected to abide by said standards. Not terribly uncommon where families with children are concerned.
The most off-putting thing about him seems to be this religious fervor he exhibits towards Ultima, but once the game's final stretch rolls around – particularly the battle atop Reverie – it's abundantly clear that his devotion wasn't even about Ultima in the first place. It was about holding on to the one thing that he felt tied them together, even when separated by death.
It was about his mother and her love for him.
As he looks to the statue of Ultima in his final moments, he doesn't seem to pay his god any mind. He doesn't care about Ultima, about the fate of the world, about how he's wasted his life on a lie. That lie – that Ultima would reunite him with his mother in death – is the only thing that kept him going: The faintest flicker of hope that, somehow, the atrocities committed against him and his people would be rectified, and he could be with her again.
I am obsessed with him, with the layers of development, with the very real psychological impact of losing the one person who made you feel safe and heard.
