I just wanted to remind y'all that this account will be RETIRED/INACTIVE by this time next week (5/30/23).
If you would like to continue to get the latest news and analysis of Bo Burnham, please make sure to follow @standupcomedyhistorian (NO hyphen like this account has). You can tell you're on the right account if you see my new logo courtesy of @lomleyo 🙌🏼
In addition to continuing to explore Bo's works, I plan to write deep dives about other comics, and I'm going to provide a history of Kate Berlant's one-woman show (including SO many of the tiny Kate pictures that had plastered the walls of the Connelly...even the bathrooms!) with my own take after seeing it 3 separate times and exclusive audience interviews.
I will also be taking a look at forgotten gems of comedy such as books like Wigfield and cartoons like Sit Down, Shut Up.
Finally, I'm planning to post and finish my decade-old series about Sandra Lee's terrible children's cookbook, Cool Kids' Cooking, in which I compare each chapter to a ring of Hell in Dante's Inferno haha
It should be a LOT of fun (and certainly nostalgic for millennials like myself), so please follow my new account—exactly the same as this one, but with NO hyphen—by next week.
Thanks so much, and keep it here (and eventually there) for more comedy! ✌🏼
Hi! You’ve probably already heard this question, but do you prefer younger make happy/what bo or an older inside bo in terms of comedy ? I’m a younger bo kinda person but if your fav is Inside I wanna know why!
Hey!
I am no longer using this account (please follow @stand-upcomedyhistorian for my posts), but I did want to answer this question. 😀
So, I first became obsessed with Bo in 2019 after watching Eighth Grade and then Make Happy. Since Bo's 2016 special is what I first saw him in, that's my favorite era (basically Make Happy to Promising Young Woman).
However, I adore Inside Bo (it's what led to me wanting to do all this analysis and creating a website to house my writing), and that is undoubtedly my favorite special of his. But I still contend that MH is his funniest one!
As I wind down my Bo-focused content before my big website relaunch in May, I have decided to publish the random Inside information I've collected over the past two years (SO much unnecessary research! lol)
First up is my list of all the awards and accolades Bo has won/received since his masterpiece premiered. You can check it out here.
As I conclude in that post, it's only a matter of time before Bo reaches EGOT status, and he's well on his way to doing that!
Today's interview is with Franch, the creator of the Inside Escape Simulator game.
This Bo-inspired Steam mod was a LOT of fun to discuss, and Franch incorporated just about every Inside reference you can think of into his escape room—there's even a Socko and some *problematic* items you can set on fire! Haha
In addition to being a skilled game designer, Franch has recorded wonderful covers of Bo's songs for his game. And he even has original comedy music—be sure to check out his new song about Elon Musk!
Oh man...just found out the award mentioned in the special (the American Humour Award) is fake—yes, I am very gullible lol
I was wondering why I never had seen Bo's win in 2016 on any of his lists of accolades (I'd assumed it was for Make Happy). So stupid of me 🙃
One of my favorite TikTok/YouTube channels, frightenedkiwi, just uploaded a video of Bo Burnham that I had NEVER seen before! 🤯
youtube
Apparently Bo makes an appearance in Joe Mande's Netflix special during which he and George Wallace dole out advice to Mande about how to create an award-winning comedy special.
Bo is definitely in his The Big Sick era here (his responses are very CJ lol).
While the whole thing is very tongue-in-cheek, Bo does know something about winning awards! Haha
I just watched an absolutely fascinating new video essay about Bo Burnham and Inside. Check it out here!
youtube
In case you've missed it, I had posted an essay a day last April as the Bo Burnham Historian, so I have watched a TON of Inside videos.
I can honestly say that this is one of the best video essays I've ever seen—a truly academic dissection of performed authenticity.
Please let me know what you think—do you find the blend of reality and performance off-putting, or do you relish the mix as I do? Kate Berlant trades in a similar discussion of what it means to be "real" in her one-woman show.
One of my favorite stand-up comedians, Jerrod Carmichael, just won a WGA for his phenomenal special, Rothaniel—woo-hoo!
If you'd like to learn more about Jerrod's works, I have a primer here.
If you're interested in better understanding the audience's perspective at Rothaniel, I have conducted some interviews with those in the crowd that you can read about here.
Finally, there's my ongoing series on Jerrod and his clothing choices here.
Since I'm dropping the Bo Burnham Historian moniker soon, I have been trying to assemble any Bo-related items before May 30 (when I officially switch to SUCH and launch my new website).
Case in point: Rather than posting every day this month as I did for #FanartFebruary, I have compiled a Bo interview a day for March that you can read at your leisure here
These are some of my favorite interviews with Bo, and the Eighth Grade ones in particular offer greater insight into why he made Inside.
Plus lots of entertaining moments like every interaction of Bo with Tim Key! Haha
I hope you enjoy the list, and feel free to respond with any other interviews you appreciate.
I plan to do a similar monthly list for April that will feature another favorite medium: Podcasts! ✌🏼
Today's interview with NeddyEdits is up on my website now—check it out!
Neddy is one of the most prolific editors of Inside content, including the incredibly popular 4-panel videos on YouTube that have millions of views (and was used for CowEye's Shit DDR vid—worlds colliding! Haha)
But that's not all he does by a long shot!
Neddy also has a series of Inside trailers in the style of other properties, like Disney and DC.
He even did one for Marvel before Inside Studios! 🤯
Please follow my new blog where I will be posting about stand-up comics, musical comedians, retrospectives, and more! 🙌🏼
Hi, everyone!
Welcome to my new official blog! 🙌🏼
For my first interview as the Stand-Up Comedy Historian, I chatted with CowEye, an amazing DDR player who recently uploaded a video of himself dancing to Bo Burnham's Shit.

Check it out here, and stay tuned for more comedy fun! ✌🏼
We've made it to the end of #FanartFebruary, and the final day will be highlighting one of the most intriguing and mindblowingly creative artists I've ever seen—WALLofWORDSart!
youtube
I spoke with this artist (his real name is Travis) about his insanely detailed word art and how he makes it in this interview on my website. Check it out!
Travis also has an Etsy shop where you can buy your very own word art—I got the Inside one for my 40th birthday last year, and I love staring at all the lyrics in the framed art. One of the best pieces I own...and it came with a personalized card! 🥳
That's the end of this month of fanart fun. Be sure to check out the complete list of entries on Tumblr or on my website. Thanks, and I hope you all enjoyed it! ✌🏼
It's the penultimate day of #FanartFebruary and, as such, I have a special treat that I adore as a fan of both Bo and the Pixar movie—Bo Burnham: Inside Out!
The artist ratclownjared really captures the different personalities perfectly (Fear is wonderful and looks just like Bo in ATL haha).
Anger-
Disgust-
Joy-
Sadness-
Which is your favorite emotion as Bo? I'm torn between Sadness and Joy, personally, but they are all SO great.
Keep it here for the final entry tomorrow—it will be incredible! ✌🏼
Today's #FanartFebruary entry is an intriguing take on the Grammy-winning All Eyes On Me.
Rather than do just the standard Bo eyes shot, artist klmmcqueen decided instead to show the scene from Bo's internal perspective—an amazing performance at Madison Square Garden (per the Tour shirt).
I particularly enjoy the use of the audience's hands, Bo's face, and the spotlight to convey what's going on in his mind during that song—really creative!
Keep it here for more fanart fun...just a few days left! ✌🏼
