Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
The nine subspecies of giraffe live over an expansive area of African savanna, from Niger in the northwest to Somalia in the east and South Africa in the… south. These are animals which have come to seem normal to us, but it’s hard to overstate just how weird they are. Giraffes have short, fuzzy horns, and a dark prehensile tongue. Their necks have just seven vertebrae, each one 11 inches (30 centimetres) long, with ball-and-socket joints in between. Male giraffes will use their necks to fight for dominance! The walls of their heart are almost 3 inches (7.5cm) thick to pump blood all the way to their brain; as ruminants, their esophageal muscles must also be strong enough to regurgitate food so they can chew it twice. Need I go on? You get it, they’re weird.
