i really hope i dont sound rude or anything, but it's come to a point seeing some of the statements that i cant really. empathize with parts of the stories of some of the ex-admins? it's upsetting, cause no one deserves worplace abuse and the things that they endure but like...
part of my brain cant shake off the knowing that most if not all of these admins who left had the means to stay unpaid for months. i dont know if i explain myself? i couldnt FATHOM spending even one month on a project that's not gonna be payed, let alone staying on it even logner after not getting paid on the day i was told i would
not because im some smart and strong person or something: i simply cant afford it. i cant go one month without being paid because i would go homeless, i couldnt dedicate entire days of my week to anything if it wasnt going to be paid because i wouldnt be able to eat, or pay my bills.
and these are all young people who absolutely deserve better, and who did not deserve to be exploited on the workplace but that. idk. could go months, one of them even a year without getting paid, and yes feeling the stress and the exploitation and all that it's BAD, but my brain just cant help but go "and yet they could afford to stay unpayed" and i genuinely hate it but idk.....
anyways i have no idea why im sending this i just had to vent it somewhere and you're ltierally one of the only people who i've seen be welcoming of points of view other than your own about this theme
hey anon !
First i wanna say that i get how it can be difficult to empathise when you’re yourself in a « work and get paid or starve » situation. (Been there done that so when I say I get you I really do)
And I think it’s fine to feel like that, we all have our own biases that come from our experience and living conditions. It’s fine, it’s just that it’s important not to let it completely cloud our judgement on the matter, it’s a serious enough situation for it to be way past a simple empathy check. Our personal feelings don’t really weigh on this situation as it’s far beyond that.
Because facts are that even if some of them were able to go through all this without payment (bc they had some money already, another job, lived with their parents whatever) it still remains that young people were being promised a pay they never got, got baited by the opportunity to make a living doing something they loved, working for something they were passionate about, or some just had to take the low pay because that was still better than no pay at all.
And people being in situation like yours are one of the reasons it’s so important for people to denounce poor working conditions and fight for workers rights. Because if you don’t, nothing will change and there will always be someone who’s more desperate for the job, who needs the money more, who will have to endure an underpaid, shitty job in place of someone who was "lucky" enough to be able to walk out.

i'm.... going to be that person again cause hi o/ i've done professional translation -subtitling, proofreading, typesetting and script translation- for film in latin america (where im from) and..... 1$ per minute was kind of.... the standard payment for translation and even a little high....
and even with that, i was lowballed by other translators MULTIPLE times (i had multiple instances of people telling me my rates were "too high for them". yes at 1$ a minute for translation, and then 2$ extra each minute for syncing and typesetting)
even when i worked with an european (german) company as an outsourced translator, this was more or less the expected rate
so idk. im once again sitting here in the "let me stay in my corner cause this is just standard pay for me" and it's the weirdest feel im not gonna lie
Thanks for the input !
After a quick research on this (adding it to the long list of random stuff i’ve googled because of this situation), it seems like translation pay rates can vary a lot depending on :
-Your country of residence
-The currency of said country
-The language pairing your working with
Seems like the consensus though is that translation work in general tends to be heavily underpaid 🫠🫠
For this admin’s case (who is from brazil from what I understand), SINTRA (Brazilian translators union) recommends a rate of around 6$/minutes for videos subtitles but yeah idk exactly what the average rates for EN>PT translation are, in any case it should be enough to offer a good hourly salary for translators.
Moment of silence for Lumi and any others in a similar situation who got a grand total of 0$ for her translations btw

No but like thats so sad. People sometimes seriously dont understand what an art translating is. Your often never word for word translating the literal meaning of a sentence because most words DONT translate like that. Often you get like one word that has no English equivalent or even vis versa where a string of words could maybe just be summed up with less words in English and so you need to pick what words to translate, how and how to keep the same meaning, feeling and conveyance. And like THATS HARD GUYS that takes time and effort and love and mental energy and deep deep knowledge and fluency of both languages and cutlers! Translation is a very very niche and hard job that deserves proper compensation and respect. Without it QSMP would, quite literally, not function. Youd think they would have given their translators more respect considering the success of the QSMP was and is on their shoulders.
YES 👆👆👆👆
Not only you need to speak two languages close to perfectly which is a big thing in itself, but you also need to know enough about the subject to be able to properly convey context, tone, and intent.
It’s funny (it’s not), how with each testimony the first reaction is to think "I can’t believe they treated these people like this when the job they were doing was so important for the success of the project". I’m not saying the QSMP wouldnt have been successful if it was just a normal server, but it’s close to impossible for me to imagine it be as good as it was without all the work put by the different admins team. It’s crazy they were doing so much for it and received so little, be it compensation or even just respect, in return.
I’m glad if steps are taken so that the QSMP can keep going, even if I don’t plan on watching anymore, because at the end of the day it’s still has done a great job uniting people from different communities and languages, so it would be a pity to lose that. So yeah, not wishing for it to crash and burn, and I hope it can go on while giving proper work conditions to everyone still working for it in the future.
But I have to wonder what about everyone left behind ? Whether they got let go or had to leave by their own volition as the circumstances were too harsh, you can’t build better foundations for your project’s future on these people’s past mistreatment 😵‍💫
So yeah to improvements, but recognition, compensation and justice to those who went through that mess first

This is why the admins speaking out is so important. They may have never learned that they worked on the same videos but only one of them got compensation. Fuck quackity studios and anyone who says the admins should just keep their mouths shut, really think about who that would benefit.

For context, me and a few of my fellow crows on Phil’s Discord had this idea of “What if there were Minecraft crows that were specialized and adapted to live in different realms/biomes?”
And now we have End Crows 💜
