You are in Ancient Rome, women are a commodity that you can buy off from her family in marriage. It’s very common for you to see 45 year old men get married to 15 year old girls so they can get pleasure out of them. It’s a very cut throat society, if you are poor and powerless then life is giant struggle. You are constantly competing others in order to survive.
You have recently become a Christian and your church has received a letter from Paul.
In the first few pages of letter Paul lays down the definition of love. And he dose it by associating the word love with submission and an act of seeking other’s wellbeing before yours. Then to further illustrate He says, “Husband love your wife, just as Christ loved the Church.” (Eph 5:25) Love?! Remember the word association: submit, seek her well being before yours, in other words she doesn’t exist to serve you. You need serve her. Get off your high horse and submit to her, seek her well being in all ways. You protect her and take care of her, even if it requires you to die (as Christ died for the church) don’t step back, give your life for well being.
As Roman man who buy women like commodity in marriage for his own pleasure. Paul’s word turns your whole life upside down.
“Wives submit yourself unto your husband, as unto the Lord.” (Eph 5:22) Now he is calling women to seek the well being of this cruel man who treats her like an object. To submit to him. “As husband is the head of wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: he is the savior of the body.” (Eph 5:23)They way Christ served the Church. And He saved by giving unto the will of lord he father and sacrificing his life, seeking the wellbeing of the church.
Both husband and wife are called to sacrifice themselves and serve one another - seek each other’s well being.
Now they are constantly trying submit to one another. Trying to out do each other in service.
That’s Christian marriage.

Chaotic waters in Bible is often characterized as dangerous. In Gen 1 deep chaotic waters didn’t allow life to exist and flourish. In the story of Noha continuous rain wiped of life. In the story of exodus Read Sea became a death sentence. In all the case the Bible presents God as the only being who has power over it.
In Gen 1 He organized the chaotic water, in the story of Noah rain started and stopped on God’s command, in the story of Exodus God parted the Read Sea so Israelites won’t be killed.
Look at this poetic reflection of Biblical authors on Exodus story:
“Yet He saved me for his name’s sake,
to make His might power known.
He lead them through the depths as tough a desert.” (Psalms 106:8-9)
Mark 4 characterizes chaotic water as an angry squalls. Like it’s a furious creature that is ready kill. Jesus rebukes it.
What waters are testing your faith? Allow the spirit shape your perspective of God through these stories.
Gen 1, Exodus 14, Psalms 69 & 106, Mark 4.
