Akaso Eiji interview

I translated Akaso Eiji’s (Adachi) interview from today! It was surprisingly honest for an Oricon entertainment article. Japanese original in the source. I skipped the introduction because I am lazy.

30-sai made doutei dato mahoutsukai ni nareru rashii is getting a good reception, even topping the Oricon drama satisfaction ranking. How does that make you feel?

It’s been a pleasure to receive positive comments from viewers enjoying the show. Even the people around me who usually have high standards have been praising the show. It again makes me happy to get to be part of something so wonderful.

The show contains a bl theme. Did you have any concerns about appearing in this genre?

When I first got the offer, my manager told me the role is a 30-year-old virgin in a bl who can use magic. Hearing just that did made me wonder what on earth is going on. However, after reading the original work, I found it a very heartwarming story and all the characters fleshed out. I therefore had no concerns about the role.

Things may be interpreted in different ways, but was there anything that you were particularly careful about in your portrayal?

I believe the original story and the script can be enjoyed by anyone. So all I did was stay conscious of things like joy, jealousy, and the love that comes from interpersonal relations.

How did it feel like to portray love between men?

I did have some initial concerns, but it’s no different from a straight love story. At the core, the process of falling in love is the same. I used to think that friends don’t turn to lovers, regardless of gender. However, Kurosawa’s kindness evokes all sorts of feelings in Adachi, and gradually he falls in love. Portraying that process made me think that perhaps romantic love and friendship are not entirely different categories after all.

Viewers have praised your portrayal of Adachi for being geeky and clumsy. How did you prepare for the part?

I thought about boundaries and ways of carrying yourself. I’m shy when it comes to approaching people, so amplifying that part of me became the key. I became very aware of other people’s gazes thanks to that. As for my clumsiness, I thought that yawning or scratching my back and so forth would accentuate how human the character is, so I tried to insert those gestures whenever possible.

Did you talk about the role with your co-star Machida Keita?

Yes. We would discuss the progress of the story and the feelings of the characters. He helped me work through parts where I felt unsure. We talk a lot about other matters too, we have so much in common. Our favourite music, childhood hobbies, family background, our love for matcha… I’d like to have dinner with him sometime when when the situation is better.

Do you have a favourite scene?

They’re all Kurosawa’s scenes rather than mine. The scene in the first episode where he puts the scarf on me, or the scene in the second episode where he picks up the documents. I pretty much love all the scenes where Kurosawa does something for Adachi.

In the beginning Adachi feels inferior to Kurosawa for his good looks and skills. Have you ever had a similar experience?

So many times. There was a time when I envied people who kept getting roles while I failed my auditions. I was 21 when I started acting, but around me I saw people who’ve been doing this for much longer, always delivering with their acting and opinions, with wonderful insight. I blamed myself for not starting earlier.

You’ve experienced such a time.

Yes. However, I am me, and things got easier after I understood I have to accept myself.

What made you see that?

I drove myself into a corner and had a breakdown. I was trapped in a cycle of worrying about not having work in the future and losing roles. In the end I just thought, to hell with it.

You have also appeared in the Kamen Rider series. Many actors have started their careers in Rider, including many young actors like Suda Masaki and Yoshizawa Ryou. Do you want to become the next breakout star?

Sure, if things worked out that way, but I don’t really have a strong drive to become the next big thing. I’d rather continue to come across wonderful people, directors, and stories. I’m probably not that focused on myself. Though I did proclaim I’d make a living acting during my auditioning period.

You may say that, but you’re getting a lot of work in shows and movies now. Your first photobook will be out on November 28. There must be something that has changed for you or your surroundings.

I can’t really speak for the people around me since I didn’t meet almost anyone due to covid. As for myself, I spent over a month at home during the state of emergency. This was when I had a lot of anxiety about my acting and I disliked myself. However, during that period I was able to come to terms with myself. I realised I need other people, they make me into who I am, it was a weight off my shoulders.

Why did you start to dislike yourself?

Deep down I’m a bit of a perfectionist, or maybe just a masochist, so even if I’d succeed, I’d still tell myself it wasn’t good enough. Maybe I would’ve started to hate myself even more if I’d continued down that path. I think having to stop for a moment was actually good for me. This show started shooting in early September when I was able to come into it from a good place. I met so many wonderful people including the cast and the crew, it was a happy time in my life.

What kind of an actor do you want to become in the future?

I’m afraid that I’ll burn out if I set too many goals. Instead of setting goals for myself, as a person I’d like to become someone like the senior actors I’ve worked with. Nakai Kiichi is an actor whom I respect a lot, I’d like to become like him one day.
