When I say Azula wasn't born evil...
...and explain my reasoning, I am often met with "all of your arguments could apply to Ozai, too!" as if it's some kind of "gotcha!" when.... yes.
I have no doubt that Ozai was once an abused child as well. An abused child who deserved better.
Literally no one just emerges from the womb that way, every modern psychiatrist ever would agree with me.
Ozai is a product of his environment every bit as much as Azula is.
Imperialism, abuse, neglect, lack of unconditional love, no real boundaries, and worst of all fucking AZULON as a father.
It really does not take a genius to figure out that the Fire Nation royal family is just one big abuse cycle, perpetuated generation after generation.
And yes, there is a part of me who feels bad for Ozai, too. He never had a chance to be better, to know love, friendship, trust, safety and security, the beauty of being kind to others. It's a very tragic story. A father passing on the hurts and horrors of his own past to his wife and children.
Understanding and acknowledging this IS NOT excusing it.
To this day, it continually baffles and frustrates me that people deny one of the core tenets of the show: Absolutely no one is "born bad". We are all capable of great good and great evil.

Why do people go on about how terrible atla is, yet they have atla themed blogs and post about it constantly ?

I agree with all of these reasons but numbers 1 and 3 are especially true, and are basically spelled out for us. Like come on people lol
Reasons why Azula doesn’t respect Iroh(speculation)
1. Ozai has been badmouthing Iroh all her life.
2. Azula is perceptive enough to pick up that Iroh is a massive moral coward and a hypocrite.
3. Iroh abandoned his duty to the Fire Nation to retire and wallow in hedonism(see #2).
3. Iroh has never treated her well, shown much interest in her, or demonstrated any real love or compassion toward her. He’s either been condescending to her, or he’s treated her like a threat.
4. Iroh evidentally favors Zuko over her.
5. Iroh doesn’t have the balls to actually stand up to Ozai.
6. Iroh keeps ranting about destiny while doing nothing to make his own fate.
7. If we go off the implications of Iroh’s treatment of June in “Bato of the Water Tribe,” it’s pretty likely that Iroh was openly sexually harassing women all around the palace.
8. Iroh got her cousin killed in pursuit of “Iroh’s grand destiny” and then didn’t avenge him.
9. Azula (from Book 1 onwards) knows/believes that Iroh has committed treason and dragged Zuko along with him.
People always seem mystified by Azula not liking Iroh and try to blame it on Ozai or on Azula “just being evil,” but it always seemed to me that Azula has many reaons not to like or respect him, and very few reasons to respect him.

I'm someone who likes looking at things critically, no matter how much I love the series. So I went to the ATLA critical tag in the hopes of seeing takes and opinions that will raise up points I never thought of. Its fun and engaging for me and I've seen some pretty good, genuine and thought provoking points from some criticism of the show.
I stopped because I soon realised the tag is just 90% z*tarians complaining and whinging endlessly about z*tara not being canon. and ofc aang bashing. and they try to disguise this by being faux smart and oh so superior with their line of thinking. when all their opinions can just be boiled down to 'I hate that my otp isnt canon so I'm going to raise up some criticism that can easily be debunked by thinking for 5 seconds!'. case in point: the 'aang is a monk so he shouldn't get married!! he doesn't respect his culture!!' is also tagged with atla critical
well fuck the airbenders then I guess we should let them go extinct to uphold their culture. but oh aang should have killed ozai- *that* aspect of his culture should have been disregarded. they're so blatant in their bias and I've been in fandoms long enough to know which fans think of themselves as better and smarter than the rest when they're very much not. its annoying as all hell
me@z*tarians: GET OFF THE CRITICAL TAG. YOUR ENDLESS MOPING ABOUT Z*TARA IS NOT VALID CRITICISM OF THE SHOW
And god forbid you post something that is pro or even neutral on Aang in the pro-Katara tag, because Zutarians think that one belongs to them and only them.

I think there should be more popular media with incest to make antis cry. They should open an episode of a TV show and see uncle and niece fucking nasty, and then go read a manga to find out their favorite character has a crush on their sibling. Incest should haunt them everywhere they go until they start to dream of incest. Only then the gods of incest will spare them.

This is why Mai really is perfect for Zuko. She loves him, and respects herself, enough to not let him get away with things he shouldn't.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved Mai so much in this scene. When Zuko says to her that his life hasn't been easy either, she immediately claps back with "Whatever! That doesn't excuse the way you've been acting!"and she was absolutely right. His behavior was terrible, and he deserved to get called out for that. Which is another reason why I like these two together: Mai isn't afraid to call Zuko out on his shit.
Yes, Zuko suffered a lot. But he wasn't the only person going through something, nor would he be the last. And for people who think that their suffering is more important than literally everything else? They need that reminder from time to time.
