Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
He read the birth announcement in full three times, his mind blank, before it fully sank in; a fourth time, as his thoughts began to race. Could it be a coincidence – a different McFly family – no. There might well be other McFlys in Hill Valley but the names all lined up. The dates lined up.
He hadn’t meant to remember the date – had tried his best not to retain any details of future events – but it had stuck in his head. It had been no coincidence that he’d been reading the birth announcements. He’d been casting an eye over them for the past few days with a faux-casual air that would fool no-one. There were a handful of other announcements for babies born on June twelfth. No other McFlys.
His palms began to prickle with sweat, his insides souring, as he read the announcement for a fifth time. There was no possibility that he had misread it. It was right there, in black and white. There was only one conceivable explanation.
It was a beautiful June day; sunlight streamed through the foggy windows of the garage onto the cluttered table where the newspaper lay, tucked in amongst his breakfast dishes and his notes and sketches and half the contents of his toolbox. A beautiful, still, ordinary morning, that had ripped his guts clean out of his body.
They had fixed it. They’d put the timeline back on track. He wanted, childishly, to plead that this couldn’t have happened; it wasn’t fair. They’d done everything right.
But it had always been a long shot.
