In Croatia, Catholic Catechism classes are taught in all state schools, and although non-Catholic children have some rights to opt out of the classes in theory, in practice non-Catholic students at most schools are not provided with any alternative classes.

I'm not a big fan of the flowers on the bottom, but wow, that's a gorgeous menorah! I love the unconventional shape and the colour of the arms!
So @wheresonichedgehogwnt gifted me the loveliest menorah because she is a beautiful beautiful friend and just…it is so me. Also @lemonsharks gifted me a beutiful mezuzah which has pomegranates (Persian Jew) and in short I have the loveliest friends

That's a good question. Because you're right, it's often a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
I think part of it may come from the fact that they get offended that you're not taking them seriously. To us, it may seem as threatening as a kid saying you won't get a gift from Santa if you're not good, but to them, it's serious business.
If they're saying it out of genuine concern for your future well-being they're probably stressing out that you aren't taking what to them is a very real threat to your safety seriously.
And if they're saying it with bad intentions they're probably upset their threat/insult didn't land.

The reason Christians act surprised when people get mad/offended when called things like "disgusting sinner worthy of eternal torture" is that being told "you're an unworthy piece of shit and should be grateful that God would deign to forgive you for existing" is so normalized in their religion that they don't realize how insulting and awful what they're saying is.
It's so insanely abusive but they just can't see it.
