Happy -420th birthday, Booster and Michelle! My gift to you is the same thing it has been since like 2008: this crappy, ancient photoshop, crafted with love.

some people think that e-rated fanfiction is written with the author in a constant state of arousal, but those people are vastly overestimating the erotic appeal of consulting a thesaurus every few sentences to find another synonym for "thrust"

A full explanation of #reviewbombgate, a major scandal that broke on Booktwt this week.
Please support the books and authors impacted the most:
Kamilah Cole - So Let Them Burn
Bethany Baptiste - The Poisons We Drink
Molly X Chang - To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods
Frances White - Voyage of the Damned
KM Enright - Mistress of Lies
RM Virtues - the Gods of Hunger series
(PS. I know people love to jump to "YA authors are always acting up" and assume any author with a femme-sounding name writes YA so lemme say right now that this author writes adult sci-fi.)

Had my co worker help with a return and Lynn (frequent customer, talks a LOT and is nice enough but sometimes we just don't have time) misgendered her and then argued with her over her gender and made her cry and then after j left i was like hey Lynn thats not a very nice thing to say. And she's like omg I didn't mean anything by it!! Tell her sorry! And I'm like yeah I could tell you didn't mean it maliciously at all, but its still not nice.
Then I told her I was trans cuz fuck it. And gave her resources. She asked whats in my pants and I said that's also not okay to ask and she's like ohh I see why.
Like genuinely didn't know trans etiquette, had no ill intentions. I gave her resources to learn, and it ended up okay. I could tell she really just didn't know.
And I bought j chocolate. Just cuz I usually pass now doesn't mean I've forgotten how much it hurts. I still have those nightmares. Have to feel my beard is still there to go back to sleep.
Next morning, I wake up to a text in the manager group chat saying she is banned. For this and many reasons, but this transphobia was the last straw.
She's also just generally annoying, talks to everyone, buys 3 things but spends 3 hours here, argues over returns, everything that's just annoying. We are all relieved.
In the year of our tormenter 2023, you should know basic etiquette enough to not argue with someone's gender or ask what's in their pants. Get with the program.

Reminder that it's less than a month before pharmacies will be closed for end-of-year holidays. Make sure that you will have enough medications to see you into the new year.

I keep thinking about how the media frames Palestinian children, stripping them rhetorically of their childhood by convoluted phrases like 'people under 18' and 'minors as they call them'. I know this language. It is used for black children all the time. Black children aren't children. They're 'young men' and 'twelve-year-olds in adult bodies'. Colonial dehumanisation.

i need well meaning cis people to stop attemping to steelman trans healthcare conversations because it basically always ends with them just lying about easily checkable things "no minors are getting irreversible treatments" wrong not true "no minors are having surgery" also false, like instead just say the truth: currently some minors (few, but some) are able to access hrt that will have some irreversible changes on their body, some (even fewer) minors are able to access surgery.
the counter to transphobes screaming "these kids are being irreversibly changed" isn't "no children are accessing this care" it's "puberty is also an irreversible change" and "i think under 18s and even under 16s should be able to make medical decisions actually"
"no minors are accessing this care" means that transphobes can easily point to the examples of minors who are accessing that care, which just make us look like liar. sometimes teenagers and children need to make medical choices on their own. i think a 14 y/o should be able to get an abortion. i think trans kids and teens should be able to have the approriate care, which for some will just be like, picking a new name or haircut, and for some, sure, could be surgery.

help hazelnut stay in a room!
so we're in hotel #14, and we *really* don't want to leave here, because the alternative is we're on the street and the temperature is getting lower and there's snow in the forecast for this week, and obviously being in either for an extended period of time is not survivable
we really need help with paying for this room as we fight to get mom's points with Marriot's customer service and her Social Security because it's been impossible to get both thus far, so if anyone can donate to my gofundme or help us in another way, *please* do so

LeVar Burton Is Still Fighting For Your Right to Read
Tumblr media
In an age of unprecedented book bans, the actor and literacy advocate is going to the mat for the freedom to read. "America loves to live in the shadows," he says, "but we're living in an age when the truth wants to come out."
by Adrienne Westenfeld
Nearly two decades after PBS’s long-running series went off the air, the Reading Rainbow generation is all grown up. Their love of reading and knowledge is an enduring gift, courtesy of host LeVar Burton and the show’s producers—but in an age of unprecedented assaults on the freedom to read, what’s to become of today’s young readers in the making? As ever, Burton is looking out for them. The actor and literacy advocate recently served as the honorary chair of Banned Books Week, an annual October event dedicated to raising awareness about attempts to remove reading materials from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Now, he’s making his second appearance as the host of the National Book Awards, where “censorship” will no doubt be the word on every honoree’s lips. “I've put in work in this field; I've put in time on these issues,” Burton told Esquire. “I'm happy to be the face of it and represent it, because these are matters that I care deeply about.”
Great interview, worth the read.
"The whole idea of Americans being in control of their own bodies, their own minds, and their own destinies is a political issue, which is weird, given the fundamental underpinnings of the creation of this nation. But here we are, having this conversation about bodily autonomy, what kids should read, and what we should think. For me, it's a fight worth fighting. It's not only a conversation worth having. It's a fight worth fighting... The fight for reproductive freedom is tied to the effort to ban books. They're definitely linked. What we're looking at is authoritarian control, and that's just not part of the charter."

So, I'd thought I'd have time to do the song of the day and other stuff, like holiday prep and Nanowrimo, but turns out, I don't!
So, see you January, since I'm not gonna have time in December either.
