My hornwort grows beautifully in this tank. I equate the success of this environment to 4 things:

1) The substrate was designed for planted tanks and inherently buffers the PH in a more acidic range.

2) The entire thing was planted while unfilled with water and in enough volume as to directly compete with any potential algae growth. 

3) Water flows throughout efficiently with no dead spots. (well... 1 but it’s small and provides some hiding area for the Japonica Shrimp.) 4) Injected CO2 that has been constant from the first day I set it up. 

(There is more to running a successful tank, but these elements working together made this tank much more successful than some of my other environments. )

CRT monitors are the best thing ever.

Cichlid tank is particularly simple right now. I had algae form on the plastic plants and I was not happy with the way it looked. I decided to do a major cleanup.  You can see, I use a wax pencil meant for clothing patterns on the surface of the fish tank. This way when I need to collect data or log records I can do it directly on the glass rather than on a slip of paper somewhere I will surely loose.  Because I have them in alkaline water and not brackish I decided to try using some floating plants on the top of the tank to reduce nutrients that the algae would use to stay alive, as well as reduce some of the light in there.

The Salvinia is veracious. May I express caution to the hobbiest who plans on cultivating it. This thing grows out of control. Dispose of properly.

Introducing Tycho the dumbo betta in his planted 5 gal fluval chi. Can’t wait for his color to develop!

I need help identifying the fish with the red tail. It’s a barb of some sort, but what type? It hitchhiked here along with 2 other sibling eggs, stuck to a plant. They were the only fish in the tank at the time, so they grew up no issue.  On another note, I didn’t inject CO2 into this tank, and the ground cover suffered because of it. I’m still enjoying the layout, though. 

Floating aquarium plants

The Tilapia are getting huge. I feed them pond food, so almost every day they look like they have grown in size. Largest fish I have now.  This species of fish was cultivated by the Egyptians over 4,000 years ago, and so are depicted with it’s own hieroglyph.

I decided to go with some older T12 fixtures and 2 different types of bulbs (a full spectrum and a plant-grow light.) I wanted to get plant-rated wide-spectrum LEDs but they were too expensive for me. I had the T12s lying around. Hopefully, this helps! Aquarium SCIENCE!
