My book is really slow too and nothing exciting really happens, I feel like the only people who would really enjoy it are people that really understand how the language in the book is working. So at first I didn’t like the book cause I understood none of it, but as I am doing the project I am understanding more and more and now I am starting to think about how I am actually liking the book.
Reading #2
As I read more into the book I am still having issues with the characters and although the storyline is interesting, I’m having a hard time really getting into it. I like the concept of it, but as I progress, there just doesn’t seem to be anything exciting happening. It started off kind of slow and I was hoping that it was just how it started, but as i read more into it, I’m not seeing anything really happening. There are some concepts that are repeated a lot. Some of the same characters going back and saying the same things over and over again and I just feel like there is no real progression in the story so far. Im hoping that changes as i get farther in.

For me I don’t know if I really like Alice, to be honest she is sometimes an annoying know it all little bitch. She gets put into Wonderland and everything she thinks is now opposite and the people are getting snooty with her because she is trying to argue that they do everything all wrong where in reality she is now in their world and is the one doing everything wrong. Alice is just to proud of herself to say that she is wrong and is why she struggles so much with trying to figure out how to navigate through the world.
Reading the work 3
Enoch Emery is one of my favorite characters ever. His character is so out there that it’s hilarious. The way he ~listens to his blood~ is such a creative literary quirk that Flannery attributed to him; I really love her as a writer. This chunk of the book has basically been all about him, which I really enjoyed reading, because Haze’s nihilism and obsessive preaching can get a little uninteresting after a while. Emery provides a nice comical relief, in my opinion, but I’m wondering if his character will contribute more than that as the book goes on. Also, I remember when we were searching for funny ap lit books last year to read over the summer, and if I had read this book I would have totally suggested it ‘cause I find this book hilarious.

Yea, my book was hard to read at times to, the language of it just gets so confusing sometimes that I have a hard time trying to keep up with what is happening and what the characters are saying. Things quickly change too so Alice will be one place one second and the next she is in an entirely different place and it’s a little overwhelming.
Reading The Work 6
So I am officially done with The Scarlet Letter! That was one of the most dramatic books I’ve ever read. In my earlier blogs I mentioned that I was having trouble staying focused on the text. I tried many different things like listening to music, reading in silence, reading before I go to bed in bed and so on. None of these techniques had a specific change for my distraction but some of them helped a little. Now my book. Wow! It had quite the ending! This was the opposite of what I expected was going to happen. *Spoiler Alert* I did not think that Dimmesdale was going to die! I honestly thought that their plan to go to Europe was going to go through. Now looking back I don’t know why I would have thought that because obviously Chillingworth was going to do something crazy on the boat. The ending was just a big surprise for me! Well, I’m glad I’m done! Off to do the rest of the project!

Idk I felt kind of opposite to you, I was afraid about starting my abstracts and not so much my annotations, maybe it’s because I feel like I have gotten more practice in class doing annotations and looking at criticisms is something new. But once you get into it then it doesn’t really seem all that bad.
Research #2
In all honestly doing the abstracts wasn’t that bad, there was a lot of reading involved but I made it through and I’m happy that part is over. Starting the annotations is pretty scary. I’m trying to jump into this project with the hopes that I don’t drown in the heavy load. I think as soon as the ball gets rolling I’ll be okay but till then I’m just going to go for it and hope for the best.

What really helped me was looking back at my background sources to see if I could find anything that related what was going on in the book with things that happened in my author’s life. At the end there is a poem and the first letters of the poem literally spell out the real Alice’s whole name which is really interesting and I probably wouldn’t have noticed unless I researched a bit more.
Research 3
I’ve finally sat down to do my annotations. Yes, I’m a little behind but I think I can make it work. The hardest part for me is choosing which passages to annotate because the writing style stays fairly the same the entire book, there’s no real changing points that showcase any different types of writing in it. And my criticism’s don’t exactly focus on anything specific in the book either, just the overall writing style. I think I’m going to reread some parts of the book to try and get a better idea of which parts of the writing I should be annotating.

The Annotations....
I have annotated my three passages now and am starting to write in more detail about them and getting ready to do my introduction to them. I’m really afraid that I’m not doing it right. I’ve asked other people how they are doing theirs and mine looks similar so I guess that’s good. My background sources are done at this point and I have a good idea about how Carroll’s life has influenced the book and how Alice comes into play. It’s really interesting that Carroll enjoyed spending time with the children so much.... it almost seems a bit creepy.

I did something very similar, and watch the Alice In Wonderland movies. The cartoon version definitely was closer to the books than the Tim Burton version. Tim Burton’s went more in a different creepy way of Alice and really only took the twins from Through The Looking Glass while the cartoon version went more in the middle between the books including more parts of both. The movies definitely lost something that the books had and that was language which is a huge part of why the books were so acclaimed. The movie doesn’t seem to strike me as hard as it used to, and I don’t know if it’s because I’m older and the dream world has faded from my mind, or for other reasons. I’m thinking that what has happened to me is what Carroll feared the most while writing the book, that the children such as Alice would grow up and lose their innocence and sense of wonder that is so important to being a child.
Tumblr media
As part of my research, I watched the movie adaptation of Wise Blood. I had heard a lot of good things about it, and it has a lot of hype online, but I wasn’t thrilled by it. Having read the book, I felt like it was missing some key parts. However, having read some criticisms is what really threw me off for the movie I think. Because of the criticisms, I felt the characters in the movie were lacking in development, as everyone in the movie is supposed to be without moral, yet there were a few city folks who appeared to be kind. Also, Enoch’s ending was changed to give it a new meaning, which I wasn’t totally unhappy with, but that’s just another observation. A lot of the scenes in the movie were spot on with the book, and then there were some that weren’t or weren’t even there. Watching the movie did help me to pick out some important scenes I could use for my annotations, though.

Metafiction
The character that I would take with me to prom would be BMO from Adventure Time, as BMO is very funny and would be an awesome companion to take. BMO would be able to entertain me and my friends, take pictures throughout the night, and is just as weird as I am.

Here is me looking so excited to be at the OU library. It really wasn’t bad at all and I found a whole bunch of books. Thanks to Lauren and Alyssa for going with me, poor Lauren picked a bad book and didn’t really find anything but a few articles but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes! This is the librarian that I had, she was really nice and helpful and she was able to help me and the people I went with find plenty of stuff so if you see her, you are in good hands.
Tumblr media
I would like to talk about my conversation that I had with the librarian at the Oakland University Library When I first went up to her to try and find my criticism for Franny and Zooey she automatically had a smile on her face Right when I sat down she automatically said, “That is my favorite book” Now I was not done with the book yet but I wanted to have a conversation with her about the book because I felt like she would have some insight I then went on to ask her about the book, “I’m not done with it yet but I really like it I just hope that it is going somewhere important> It is going to right?” She then gave another smile and continued on to say, “Well, Salinger always had a smaller purpose in his writing than most authors in my opinion but yes it does have a bigger meaning at the end” She then started asking me if I liked it and how long I have been reading it and I explained to her my project and why I was at the library and how all of my class is actually learning how to use a library now She really thought it was a great idea of how all of the elements of the paper come together She then showed me a criticism book on catcher in the rye She thought it would really help me with my project and at first I didn’t think it would, “Does that relate to Franny and Zooey at all though, isn’t thast kind of pointless?” She then said, “Well you will soon find out that a lot of Salinger’s characters have the same characteristics in different books Holden is a lot like Zooey and has a lot of the same aspects as him” I found it interesting enough so I looked through it and ended up copying a few of the pages I then went a little stalkerish and found her profile on the OU website so I put her picture with this Now that I think about it it is really weird but she gave me some really good insight over all about the book

Ella Fitzgerald
Although Ella may be a very famous Jazz singer, much like the other ones in the list, I still believe that Ella needed someone like Billie Holiday to be making music next to her in order to make an impact on music history. Unless a group of people move together in the same direction, a great enough force is not created and are overlooked. But by having many strong black women making music at the time together, they are able to work together to change music forever.

Research and Writing
After having gone to the library, I have started reading through my criticisms and it is really interesting how other people can interpret the book so differently. One criticism may focus more on Alice herself while another may go more in detail about the language of the book. They all seem to focus on the Jabberwocky poem as well, showing it must be an important part of the story because of it’s language and structure. I think I will focus a bit on that as I write my paper.

The Library....
I went to the library with Lauren and Alissa, and I was nervous cause I had no idea what I was doing. I let Lauren talk to the librarian first, and listened before asking for help with my own research. I didn’t have quite as hard of a time with finding material as Lauren did, as the librarian instructed me to go to my section of books which ended up being quite vast. I didn’t know how many books I should grab and what would be good to grab so I tried skimming through them and marking in my head what I thought would be good criticisms and what would help as background sources. In the end, I’m really glad I went to the library with people this time, but in the future I feel like I will know more what I am doing and would be ok going by myself.

I feel opposite about how it switches back and forth from formal to dialogue, as I feel like each time it happens I lose my groove and have to get back into reading the tough writing of the dialogues. I also am interested in what is happening with Janie, as her story is interesting and makes me wonder what she is going to do.
I really love the book so far. Like most people, I struggled with reading the dialogue at first. But now that I’ve gotten used to it and no longer have to read through the dialogue really slowly to understand it, I love the way she talks. Switching back and forth between the dialogue and the...

Well knowing how much I hate reading, I'm tempted to try an audiobook as I have never used one before. It seems like it would be really helpful to better understand the characters, as I am having a hard time understanding them at all. I think audiobooks are also interesting as you don't really have to pay so much attention to the book, but just put it in the background and just listen while you do other things.
At first I was confused about the different structures that the two narrators had. One was very analytical, it was like the literature I’ve been used to (ominous 3rd person). The other narrator is Janie, who is loud and expressive and captures all the dialects of those around her in speech. It was…

ch 1-5 evaluation
During the first 5 chapters I have noticed how hard it is to understand what each character is trying to say. You pretty much have to read everything at once or you lose where you are and have to restart. I'm also kind of confused about things as we are discussing how the book is about female empowerment but so far in the book every time Janie goes against her husband she gets quiet and doesn't fight back. The book is good though for the fact that you can see each character so clearly with the way that Zora uses the dialect so that you are forcing yourself to read the book like they would have talked.

Reading The Work 6
I watched the original Disney Alice In Wonderland and was quite intrigued. The movie, even though it is about Alice In Wonderland, incorporates parts of Through The Looking-Glass such as the Jabberwocky poem, as well as the Walrus. The movie also includes characters such as Tweedledum and Tweedledee that were no in Alice In Wonderland, but rather in Through The Looking-Glass. It’s almost as if the movie is really a mix between the series rather than just on Alice In Wonderland. The same could be said about the modern adaptation of Alice In Wonderland by Tim Burton which also includes the twins.
