Sometimes the value we receive by sharing on AncientFaces is the joy of bringing kindness to strangers…Josh Currie enjoys metal detecting and discovered in Northern Ontario Canada a Sterling Silver Birks Memorial Bar of an RCAF Pilot who lost his life overseas during World War 2.
The bar belonged to 27 year old Donald Cameron Walker, the only son of Robert and Ethel May Walker, who left all that was dear to him to fight during the WW2 where he tragically lost his life.
Josh couldn’t just sit on this discovery, and thanks to his 7 months of research and perseverance, was able to return this bar to family 72 years after Donald’s passing so that now Officer Walker’s Memorial Bar is displayed alongside his medals at his local Royal Canadian Legion.
In the words of Josh, “THIS is why I dig holes in the dirt!”.
AncientFaces is a community where we share our memories about loved ones and connect with others who remember them. Often, AncientFaces empowers strangers to become friends thanks to the simple act of sharing what information we know and discoveries we make.

Remembering Lynn Garcia as "beautiful inside and out".  Lynn was a beauty queen, volunteer at the Special Olympics, and teacher at an elementary school in Washington on the way to becoming a principal. Her life was taken from her in 1986 by her husband.
Randy remembers his girlfriend Lynnie fondly so many years later, and finds sharing his memories in some ways therapeutic.  Marsha remembers Lynn as her high school friend who was fiercely independent, and Cindy remembers working with Lynn at the Seaside Pharmacy soda fountain in 1968. That is what AncientFaces does - we provide family and loved ones, old friends, and coworkers a way to connect around relationships and moments from the past. Not only so that people like Lynn will always be remembered, but also to form new connections and uncover discoveries about our loved ones.

This 1943 snapshot taken of the Blue Dreams Crew, members of the 8th Air Force 323rd Bomb Group, captured a group of men who became like brothers while serving their country during WWII. Decades later in 2009, his son David shared this photo with the community at AncientFaces. He knew only his father's name, Capt. William Weise, and thought he knew the name of one other - "Joe Bielecky". Over these last 15 years, five other families have stumbled on this photo and recognized & identified their fathers and grandfathers. That's the power of sharing moments from your past - you never know the connections and discoveries you'll make for yourself and others. Because David shared this memory, now the families of these heroes are reunited and can experience this moment together.

Shelley is a member of the community who has an impressive collection of photos she has gathered and saved from antique stores over the years. One of which is this photo of Kathrina “Kitty” Olga Banks (1882 - 1973) kneeling on a velvet couch with a tassel. Remember them?
Kathrina never married and spent most of her life working as a schoolteacher in Colusa County, California. She was active in various organizations in Colusa, such as the Colusa County Historical Society, the Colusa County Garden Club, the Colusa Women's Club, and the American Association of University Women. She was also a poet and often read her poems at literary events.
Although she didn't have children or a spouse, Kathrina had many cousins, so we are sure that she has living family members who would love to see this photo. Thanks to Shelley, this ‘Lost & Found’ photo is waiting to be discovered and reclaimed by her family on AncientFaces.

It is with heavy hearts that we pay tribute to the legendary Burt Bacharach, who passed away last Wednesday, February 8th. Burt was a pioneering composer, songwriter, and pianist who blended elements of jazz, pop, classical, and R&B to create a distinct and recognizable sound that still resonates with audiences today.
Burt collaborated with numerous lyricists over the years, including Hal David, and produced a string of timeless hits including "What the World Needs Now is Love," "Close to You," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "Walk On By," and of course the near and dear to our hearts at AncientFaces - "Do You Know the Way to San Jose."
He was awarded multiple Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his outstanding contributions to the music industry. Burt was married four times, starting with Paula Stewart in 1953, followed by Angie Dickinson in 1965, Carole Bayer Sager in 1982, and Jane Hansen in 1993.
Burt Bacharach will always be remembered as one of the great songwriters. We invite you to visit AncientFaces and share your memories about this remarkable musician. Rest in peace, Burt.

George Roberts (1766 - 1861), a distinguished veteran of the War of 1812, is one of those people I admire.
Little is known about his early life except that he was born a slave. What we do know is that in July of 1812 George was a free man who volunteered to serve on the privateer ship the "Sarah Ann" during the War. The ship made many successful raids against the British, but in September of 1812, the ship was captured off the Bahamas. Although the captain vouched that George and five others were born citizens of the United States, they were all taken captive and were under the threat of death for being treasonous British deserters who were fighting for the U.S.
After a prisoner swap was arranged, George was released and he immediately returned to privateering for the rest of the War. He joined as a gunner under Captain Thomas Boyle and was involved in the sinking of seventeen ships. When the ship returned to Baltimore he and the crew were welcomed home as war heroes.
After the War, George lived a long life in Baltimore Maryland. He married and became a laborer, and always proudly marched in parades as one of the Old Defenders of Baltimore until he died at age 95. This remarkable man will always be remembered on AncientFaces.

Guy Rockwell Muldavin (1923 - 2002) was adopted into a privileged life by Abram Albert Zadworanski Muldavin and Sylvia 'Lily' Silverblatt. He traveled the world at a very young age and was schooled by private tutors in Manhattan, Switzerland, and Connecticut.
Guy's life of privilege didn't keep him out of trouble. He married at least five times, and when his second wife disappeared in 1960, along with her daughter from a previous marriage, he was the prime suspect for their deaths.  He was also suspected of two slayings a few years earlier in Humboldt, California. At the time the police just did not have enough evidence that could prove his wrongdoing in either case. He ended up living a full life and the last 22 years were in Salinas California with his fifth wife, until his death in 2002.
Then, twenty years later in 2022, police identified the body of a "Jane Doe" being that of Ruth Marie, Guy's fourth wife, who went missing in 1974. Thanks to advances in forensic DNA and good old fashioned genealogy detective work, police were finally able to paint a full picture of Guy Muldavin's life as a serial killer.
Discover the full story of Guy Muldavin and remember his victims on AncientFaces.

Many of us had limited time with our grandparents when we were young, and some didn’t have the privilege of knowing our grandparents since they passed away before we were born. Such was the case with my grandfather, George Lawrence Benning (1898 - 1946). I was never able to meet the man, but I’m fortunate that there are plenty of memories and photos of him, courtesy my grandmother, my mother, and my sister who has done a lot of research into his life.
George Benning was, by all accounts, a man of many hats. He was a World War I veteran, a talented musician, and a ‘people person’ who enjoyed the company of other people. He began his career as a car salesman, and ended up owning the Chevrolet car dealership in Bremerton Washington. He treated his employees like family, and his family like royalty. He accomplished a lot in his short 49 years, and has left an enduring legacy thanks to the family stories and memories shared on AncientFaces.
I didn’t know my grandfather, but I feel that I did whenever I visit his biography on AncientFaces. This is why we began AncientFaces so many years ago…to create a place where we can all share our memories & discoveries while digging for our roots, and by sharing together discover more about the people we remember.

Vincent F. Azzolino (1918 - 2011) was not only a veteran of World War II, he was one of those people who will always be remembered as a stalwart and principled human who cared for and about others.
Vincent was born and raised in the city of San Francisco, and returned home to live the rest of his life there after World War II. He was a member of the Counter Intelligence Corp that focused on locating and prosecuting Nazis after the war. After his service, he worked for the fire department as a first responder, owned and operated a clothing store, and was also an accountant. He was active in his community, a member of many organizations, married three times, had a daughter and stepson, four grandchildren, and eight grandchildren. He was obviously a "people person."
A proud World War II veteran who served his country, his local community, and helped rid the world of the Nazis, Vincent will always be remembered on AncientFaces. Thank you for your service.

Lisa Loring was born Lisa Ann DeCinces (1958 - 2023), but to many of us she’ll always be remembered as Wednesday Addams. She was an actor, make-up artist, and writer, but her appearance as “Wednesday” in 64 episodes on The Addams Family from 1964 - 1966 made fans around the world.
The Addams Family was popular during the 1960s, but gained popularity over the decades with constant reruns, giving birth to numerous iterations and remakes. Lisa played the original “Wednesday” perfectly - she was the ultimate combination of “cute” and “weird”.  Lisa will always be the quintessential Addams family child.
