At the dawn of the 16th century, when the city of Jaipur was being conceptualized, artisans from all over the country were invited to aid the settlement with their skills; beautification of the city was one of the prime visions of its creator, Sawai Maansingh II. It continues to attract both artisans and their patrons to visit the city or even live there. Amongst these were the artisans of ‘Taarkashi’, who migrated to the city from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Taar means wire, the technique of inlaying fine flattened wire of brass, copper or silver in wood is called Taarkashi. The patterns in layed are usually geometric forms or florals from Mughal arts. The metal inlay is a painstaking and highly skilled process. The artisan transfers a design from a piece of paper onto a block of wood. He then carves deep, thin grooves along the trace. Fine wires of brass are placed in the grooves and hammered into position. The inlaid wire sits flush with the surface of the wood. Finishing is done by buffing, care being taken not to heat the product, as that would dislodge the wires. https://www.instagram.com/p/CUK9Ysdpsb3/?utm_medium=tumblr

Kerala is the home of mural paintings, a fine art skill and creativity par excellence. Some of the oldest mural painting dates back to 8th century. The mural is an artwork painted or applied directly onto walls, ceilings or any other permanent surface. Amongst murals, the ones from Kerala stands out for the usage of their colours and finesse. The assets used in mural artwork are pigments, gum and brushes, extracted from natural sources like plants and rocks. Composed methodically in a unique manner. Commonly used colours are saffron red, saffron yellow, green, red, blue, black and golden yellow. The subject usually revolves around ancient  Hindu mythology. Scenes depicted are usually from Puranas like Mahabharat and Ramayan. The largest mural panel in Kerala is called Gajendra Moksham from The Krishna Puram Palace. Ancient murals can be found on the walls of the Thirunandikkara cave temple. Unfortunately, these breath talking murals have received very little attention in comparison to what they deserved but efforts to preserve and revive this painting are being made by various organizations now. #handicrafts #indian #indianculture #art #artwork #instagood #instagram #supportsmallbusiness #knowledge #history #backtotheroots https://www.instagram.com/p/CSsAcBxBWY-/?utm_medium=tumblr

India is known for its rich heritage for ages. Amongst all the other things that are there, handloom is one exceptionally well-known heritage of India. In the year 2015, the Union Government had marked the 7th of August as National Handloom Day to be celebrated every year. It was to celebrate and felicitate the artisans for their contributions to the social and economic factors in the nation's growth and for preserving the art in such technologically challenging times. It's was also done to promote the handloom industry.
