Jann reached out to the man in front of him, his hand finding Jack's. "It's okay", he mumbled, his voice shaking.
"It's really not Jann." Jack sounded so frustrated that Jann felt his heart clench.
This was it. Jack would walk away from him, like he had told him he would.
And Jann had ruined it all for one stupid race.

There were good days, increasingly so and eventually Jann didn't feel as guilty for smiling again, racing around the track and enjoying the G-forces that clawed at his body.
But there were the bad ones too, the ones filled with fear and doubt and anxiety, where his panic overwhelmed him and he found himself hiding in a closet or a restroom, his knees drawn into his body and his head placed in between them as he sobbed and gasped and tried desperately not to fall apart.
It was Jack who found him, sat with him and breathed with him until he felt the pressure on his chest ebb a little and he could feel more than the ache of his pounding heart.

The Moment between Life and Death
Jack vaguely noticed Danny as he ran past him, tearing of his headset in the process. Someone, probably Danny, was shouting his name, but he didn't turn or stop. The ambulance was about to leave and he jumped in front of it, waving frantically for it to wait and take him with them. He needed to be there. He needed to know Jann was okay.
But the driver paid him no mind, even as Jack yelled at them, running after the speeding off vehicle. It was no use, but he gave up only when his lungs burned and he had to heave for air.
"Jack!" He ignored Danny's faraway voice, staring after the ambulance in disbelief and fear.
This could not be happening.
Not again.

What a miracle it was that his injuries turned out to be so minor, considering his speed and the impact when the car had hit the barrier, broken through it and flipped in the air.
He had killed someone.
And yet everyone kept telling him how lucky he was.
It was sick. All of it. And in his bad moments Jann wished he wouldn’t have been lucky.
