Reading for Comps
I’m a few books into one of my reading lists for my comprehensive exams. I recently finished Gender Trouble by Judith Butler. It was just as dense this time as it was the first time I read it. I’m thinking about the ways anti-essentialism and gender performance fit into my research. I study 17th century Atlantic literature, but I am interested in post-modern and post-structuralist thinkers I’m excited to see if post-structuralist theorist start to take a dominant role in my methodologies and frameworks.

Reading for Comps
I’m starting to seriously read for my comprehensive exam.. with the goal of knocking out 15 of 25 books on my special area list this semester. This is the first book and I’m really enjoying it, so much so I made a collage based on some of the major themes of the book! Just trying to make any part of this process a little more enjoyable.
I’ve recently hit a wall in my graduate school journey, so I’m trying to find ways to get the work done even though I really REALLY don’t want to.

I finished Desdemona last weekend! This semester has felt so odd not having lists of books on the syllabus. Between this book and few other things I have read on my own I have not been reading in the same ways I have past semesters. Maybe I shouldn't have gotten caught up in the curiosity and wonder of being bookless, and rather been more appreciative of it.
Next week, my modernism seminar is taking on a novel each week until the end of the term. I do think it will be easier to manage my time knowing I won't have time to slack off as much, but I will miss the slow pace the start of the semester allowed.

Thoughts on Desdemona? I was telling my friend how I think it was beautiful because Morrison can do no wrong in my eyes, but honestly I don't think I needed more of Desdemona's voice. Also this copy from my school library is so ugly! I have to buy my own!

I have a couple of semester long reads this Fall and I don’t know how to feel about it. Right now, it feels good to spread a whole book over the course of the semester because it seems like it offers more flexibility. On the other hand, I’m so used to profs giving 3 to 5 days for us to finish whole books. For now, I’m just going to be glad that I get to move slowly and meander through some my harder reading this year.
