What steps taken to improve quality of education in rural India?
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”- Nelson Mandela
Majority of India lives in villages so the topic of rural education is more crucial. If a country’s rural education sector is working well, it reflects on the entire economic conditions of a country. As per a recent survey, India's organized sector has only 34 million people which forms a very small strata of the total population. This statement itself says a lot about the Indian literacy rate and the education system.
Even though India’s literacy rate has registered some growth over the last few years, but it has not been able to impart the kind of education that modern times demand.
Objectives of Rural Education
·       To provide Coordination, at the national level, for rural education programs and activities.
· To provide leadership for rural education – related conferences and workshops.
· To provide a forum for all those involved in public education in rural areas – including teachers, administrators, board members, and members of the rural community at large whereby they may come together professionally and exchange ideas.
· To promote state, regional and local delivery systems which bring about efficient and effective education for children in rural areas.
· To stimulate discussion, research, and policy development regarding equal educational opportunities for all students.
Government Initiatives to promote Rural Education
The rural educational scenario is mostly dependant on govt aid. The Government of India has launched Samagra Shiksha – an Integrated Scheme for school education, w.e.f. 2018-19, which is an overarching programme for the school education sector extending from pre-school to class XII and aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels of school education.
This programme subsumes the three previous Centrally Sponsored Schemes of
·   Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA),
·  Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and
· Teacher Education (TE).
