Jang Uk's character is so compelling to me. He isn't evil but he isn't innocent either. He's shrewd, calculating and street smart. He's loyal but to people, not ideals. He constantly stands up for himself. He's self-centered without being selfish (they are two different things btw). He holds no grudges. He loses motivation easily but somehow manages to be extremely stubborn as well. He's heroic but craves absolutely none of the glory that comes with being a hero. He's literally just a nerd who wants to keep bettering himself as a mage. If the show was set in the real world he would be an academic pursuing his PhD but his thesis statement would have been rejected by all known scientists in his fields until one evil scientist (Naksu) takes him under his wing.

Ben Solo’s Resurrection
Resurrection themes have always surrounded Kylo/Ben’s journey, and I think that his journey is not at an end. The resurrection theme is still in play and is implied in multiple ways throughout the trilogy.
The Cross-guard Saber
There has certainly been heavy symbolism in the design of Kylo’s saber. Cross-guard swords were designed in the Medieval times to protect the wielder’s hand. With Kylo this principle was inverted. The cross-guard saber, unlike the blade, offers no protection and only increases the danger of self-harm, and the self-harm and self-destruction have been an ongoing motif for Kylo. In some ways, the cross-guard was a sign of knights/chivalry. In this case, it was an indication of his chivalry and protection, particularly towards the lady (Rey). Now, for the purpose of this meta, the final theme of the cross-guard carries the most weight: the religious themes of the fall of Lucifer and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Initially Kylo represents the fallen angel who was cast out of heaven (The Jedi Temple) by God the father (Luke) and the padawans (fellow angels). At the end of the trilogy, Kylo transforms back into Ben to serve as a Christ-like figure. Palpatine throws him into the pit (the descent to hell and the harrowing of hell) and he ascends again to save Rey (sacrificing himself for the sins of his predecessors). Now that he has ascended from the Earth plane and entered purgatory (world between worlds) we start to see Dante’s Divine Comedy (purgatorio) themes. The final resurrection of Ben Solo would be a remerge of the soul, and half of it lives in Rey. The sins are being resolved/absolved in purgatory (world between worlds), and Ben’s soul will be reunited with its other half in the land of the living and then they will finally depart the earthly plane together, as a whole, and ascend back to heaven.
The Dyad, the Cosmic Force, and the Living Force
The word “Dyad,” which is derived from the Greek dyás (δυάς) meaning “pair,” is the most basic human social group. The dyad is the absolute foundational human relationship, whether it’s husband and wife, parent and child, or teacher and student. No social group could come to exist without this foundational connection.
The Dyad also represents the duality of nature. Light and dark, black and white, night and day, masculine and feminine. One may not exist without the other, for one only exists at the contrasting juxtaposition of the other, and vice versa. There would be no light if the darkness didn’t exist as the contrast. There would be no masculine were there no feminine to provide the contrast, etc. A dyad in the force carries the same principle; there is no balance or even the existence of the duality of the light and the dark if the two parts of the whole aren’t in coexistence. And currently, the force isn’t in balance due to half of the dyad not existing with the living force. Unless the dyad is made complete again, the living force will once again be imbalanced, this time in the light.

If half of the dyad is remaining with the living force, the other half also cannot become one with the cosmic force. It will remain tethered in limbo/purgatory until reunited with its other half. Ben cannot truly pass on to become one with the force without his counterpart Rey.
A Dyad is one being split into two corporal forms. Ben and Rey are together are “the original dyad” or otherwise known as “The Prime Jedi.” Several pieces of imagery in the movies & artwork as well as references in written cannon materials have indicated that the Prime Jedi is reincarnated once more (as Ben and Rey) and that it has chosen to bring balance to the living force once more not by coming to the living world as one being but as two halves, whose coming together will achieve the balance (Keep in mind though, the foundational darkness in the Prime Jedi is not the same as the perverted darkness created by Palpatine).
A blatant reference to this ancient soul being reincarnated once more is made by Han Solo in The Last Shot:
“Little Ben looked up groggily, those dark eyes settling on Han, studying him. Han had no idea how a two-year-old could have such ancient eyes. It was as if Ben had been waiting around for a millennium to show up at just this moment in history.”
The directors have also alluded to this duality in Rey and Ben:

It isn’t until Ben Solo is ten years old and begins his Jedi training that the other half of The Prime Jedi is reincarnated in Rey. That Rey’s birth coincided with Ben Solo’s Jedi training is a form of “activation” by the cosmic force. Now that the journey to finding balance has begun with Ben Solo’s training, the other half of the soul is born to complete the activation. The activation is however separate from the “awakening,” which doesn’t happen until “The Force Awakens.”
The Awakening does not occur until the souls come into close proximity with one another, which happens when Ben/Kylo lands on Jakku (for the first time in his life). This “Awakening” is preplanned by the soul to happen at a particular point in time before it chooses to be reincarnated. As soon as Kylo landed on Jakku, their fate & destiny are set in motion by Rey meeting BB-8, which subsequently leads to meeting Finn. Due to being affiliated with these two, Rey has to board the millennium falcon (which has curiously been on Jakku, waiting for her until the awakening), leading to a meeting with Han Solo, which brings her closer to her other half, Han Solo’s son Ben Solo. From following Han to Takodana, Rey finally meets her other half, a meeting that was destined to occur at that point in time. And also experiences her “call to serve” with the lightsaber vision.
From the very beginning, cannon materials heavily imply that these two recognize each other and that they are drawn to each other.
She had seen this man before…in a daydream. Or a nightmare.
She found herself inexplicably drawn to…to….“YOU”

These aren’t actual memories or recognition of each other from this incarnated lifetime. It is from cellular memory on the spiritual plane. Half of the soul recognizes the other half and has memories of the other half that transcend this life cycle.
Since the activation occurred on Jakku, the two halves of the soul have been subconsciously and through the cosmic force seeking to be united with each other. Like magnets drawn to each other, they seek completion. The merge of the halves officially occurs when Rey and Ben enter each other’s minds. Once the merge occurs it can no longer be undone. Once the merge begins, it keeps strengthening to bring the halves to each other, which we see in their ever-strengthening bond. The merge transcends space time, eventually strengthening to the point that the halves can enter each other’s physical surroundings.
In TLJ, we see the soul beginning to “know” the other half once more. We see Rey being drawn to the darkness and Ben being drawn to the light.
This dynamic is drawn from Taoism (Yin and Yang), Buddhism, and Gnosticism. And the imagery littered throughout the sequel trilogy (as well as the star wars universe itself) is drawn heavily from those belief systems. We see continuous parallel shots with Rey and Ben to represent this duality. Both are presented in contrasting surroundings that represent the duality of the masculine and the feminine. In many shots half of their figure is bathed in light and the other half is bathed in the darkness. This is the process of coming to “know” the memory of the other half of the soul following the merge.
At the end of TLJ we see the halves creating an unnatural separation between themselves, but this is folly because the separation is not sustainable and is not one that can be created through the living force, for the soul is merged through the cosmic force. The more they persist with trying to create this unnatural separation, the stronger the reaction becomes every time the separation fails. Therefore, when “the bond” reopens at the beginning of TROS, we see that it is stronger than ever. Objects can be transferred through the bond and can be activated on purpose by each other, which we see Ben doing several times in the beginning to try to reach Rey.
This connection is as spiritual as it is romantic. As Jason Fry explained, romance is merely the analog we have in the living force for this deep spiritual bond. In the living world, the halves of the soul finds unity through romantic coupling, which is the basis for the concept of “soulmates” or “twin flames.” This is a form of bond that cannot be broken and was destined to occur due to the soul being split in order to seek completion in the physical plane. One cannot live and be happy without the other, and we see this frustration/anger in Ben at the beginning of the movie. He has become increasingly angry and thrown-off balance into darkness once more due to being separated from his soulmate. We see that Rey is also thrown off balance and regressed completely into the light due to being separated from her soulmate. Both are incredibly frustrated at this outcome and are struggling to connect with the cosmic force due to this separation. We see this struggle in Rey from the beginning when she’s meditating and try to become one with the other Jedi but cannot achieve this until she is completely merged once more with the other half of the soul (which we finally see at the end of the film). We also see Ben struggling to reach his grandfather and other predecessors on several occasions throughout the trilogy, and although we do not see it on screen, much like Rey couldn’t have defeated Palpatine without help, Ben could not have found the strength to climb out of the pit without assistance from the cosmic force. The living force between them had dwindled (equally) and the strength of the cosmic force was necessary for Ben to climb, reach the other half, and transfer the remaining living force to revive Rey.
Now this transfer of the living force is NOT a transfer of the other half of the soul into one being. The living force is separate from the cosmic force. The soul exists in the cosmic force. Without enough living force to sustain the cosmic force of the soul in the physical plane, Ben’s soul is no longer existing in the physical plane. However, as long as the other half of the soul continues to exist in the physical plane, becoming one with the cosmic force is not a possibility for the soul that has been split in half. This is why we do not see a force ghost for Ben. He cannot become one with the cosmic force as half a soul. Only the two of them together can become one with the cosmic force. Therefore, Ben’s half of the soul is being tethered in the in-between world (the astral plane, limbo, purgatory, world between worlds, etc) by Rey’s half of the soul remaining in the physical plane, unable to become one with the cosmic force or the living force due to the living force being diminished for half of the soul. The living force must be replenished in the other half of the soul during its stay in the in-between world, remerge once more with the other half on the physical plane, and depart TOGETHER at the end of the soul’s life cycle in order to become one with the cosmic force.
We even hear Palpatine allude to this: “Die together!”
Halves cannot die separately. One cannot depart while the other is still alive. Additionally, the balance is once again thrown off in the living force by only half of this great cosmic force existing on the plane. Palpatine remarked that Ben and Rey’s bond is strong enough that it is a form of life in itself. By only Rey existing in the physical plane, the scale is once again tipped, this time to the light side. In order for balance to attained fully, Ben Solo must be resurrected and reunited with his other half, Rey.
We only see Rey rising in TROS. We do not see Ben rising. “Darkness rises and light to meet it.” Conversely, if the light must rise, so must darkness to meet it in order to achieve balance. Therefore, Ben must “rise” once more in the physical plane for the cycle to be complete.
The World Between Worlds
In Rebels, we are introduced to the concept of “The World Between Worlds.” Although not infinite like the cosmic force, the WBW is not constrained by the laws of space time. On this plane, anything that has ever happened or will ever happen exists simultaneously, not in a linear timeline, which is how time is experienced on the physical plane.
In Rebels, when he enters the WBW, Ezra sees Ashoka battling Darth Vader (which occurs in the past on the the linear timeline of the physical plane). In order to save Ashoka from her impending death at the final blow by Darth Vader, he pulls her through a doorway/portal which brings them both back to the physical plane, with Ashoka alive again. To clarify, the souls who have already become one with the cosmic force cannot be returned to the physical plane and the living force unless they choose to reincarnate. Only the souls who are trapped in the in-between world may be brought back by another to the living world. Those who are one with the cosmic force can return to influence the physical plane as “force ghosts,” but those who are in the in between world cannot do this. They are essentially trapped in the world between worlds until they are either merged with the cosmic force or “resurrected” in the living force. We do not see a force ghost for Ben, which indicates that he is not one with the cosmic force and is currently trapped/tethered in the world between worlds.
Another movie that explores this higher dimension in depth is Interstellar. Cooper is drawn into a “world between worlds” or a dimension higher than the physical plane through a black hole, in which time does not exist in a linear fashion. All of the moments that have happened or will ever happen in his daughter Murph’s bedroom are organized into a tesseract system by beings of higher dimensions so that cooper (a being of only three dimensions) may influence these events and send Murph messages through manipulating gravity within her bedroom.
Other hints or foreshadowing of Ben not being one with the cosmic force after he vanishes
“My son is alive.” -Han Solo in TFA and TROS
This quote in particular is emphasized throughout the trilogy. While it means that Ben Solo can still be redeemed, like many statements in the sequel trilogy, it has a double meaning. This is also a foreshadow that Ben is still “alive.”
“Skywalker lives! As long as he does, HOPE lives in the galaxy!” - Snoke in TLJ
Many of us have noted how this “Snoke-ism” was referring to Ben, particularly because he pops into the frame as soon as the word “hope” is said. This is also another multi-meaning foreshadow. Hope cannot exist in the galaxy if Ben isn’t in the living world, reunited with his half.
“The last Skywalker.” - Palpatine referring to Ben in The Rise of Skywalker
Although we are all rightfully disgruntled about Rey taking on the Skywalker name, the title was not meant to refer to her. Particularly when paired with Palpatine’s description of Ben as the last Skywalker, the title of the movie is rather curious. Much like many other statements, it is likely a foreshadowing of Ben’s eventual rise to complete the “Skywalker” together with Rey.
“The Story Lives Forever.” - TROS trailer over a shot of Ben and Rey
Another foreshadowing that although the saga is ending, the characters that the trilogy is about does not end. This phrase was not put over a shot of Rey, but over both Ben AND Rey, which can only imply that their story won’t be over at the conclusion of the saga.
“We’re not done yet.” - Kylo to Rey in TFA
A really early foreshadow that Ben and Rey aren’t “done yet.” The story is not “done yet.”
“I’ll come back for you sweetheart, I promise.” - Rey’s dream in TFA novel
Many of us have picked up on the similarity to Han Solo in that term of endearment. It is believed in many cultures and belief systems that we enter higher dimensions in our dreams. Some claim of accessing the astral plane through their dreams. In this dream when Rey hears this, she goes looking for the person who said it and comes face to face with Ben. Ben only exists in her future in this life cycle so this was Rey being attuned to a dimension not limited by space time. And we know that even though Rey appears to be upset about Ben’s “passing,” she doesn’t seem distraught, which she absolutely would be if she started sobbing so strongly when she stabbed him on the death star. This statement was said by Ben to Rey after they kissed through their bond before he leaves her. This is why Rey is not distraught. She knows that this parting is not their end due to this assurance.
“No one’s ever really gone.” - Luke in TLJ referring to Ben
This is another multi-meaning foreshadow that was on the surface referring to Ben’s return from the persona of Kylo Ren but is also a foreshadow about Ben not really being “gone” at the end of TROS.
The multiple instances of healing and resurrection we see in TROS
Many are healed and resurrected both physically and spiritually: The creature, Ben Solo, Palpatine, and Rey. All of this resurrection foreshadows that the last Skywalker can also be resurrected.

The Art of Making Dynamic Dialogue
Hello, Adhita’s here. Aku kembali dengan series ‘The Art of’ yang seharusnya rutin aku posting setidaknya satu minggu sekali, tapi kesempatannya baru bisa sekarang (ha, maaf ya...)
Sesuai judulnya, tema yang aku angkat kali ini adalah The Art of Making Dynamic Dialogue.
Sebenarnya apa sih guna dialog? Dalam sebuah manuskrip cerita, dialog adalah salah satu item yang tidak dapat dihindari. Dialog berfungsi sebagai alat untuk mengembangkan karakter cerita juga menggerakan plot cerita. Selain itu dialog dapat memberikan detail informasi yang tentu saja tidak penulis jabarkan dalam cerita (not telling but showing). Namun seringkali penulis terjebak pada dialog yang monoton, sehingga tidak menggugah minat baca.
Menurut NY Book Editor, dialog seharusnya mengandung unsur:
Harus menggerakan cerita. Tiap dialog antar tokoh, pembaca harusnya menangkap kemana ceritamu mengalir, entah menuju klimaks atau kesimpulan cerita.
Dialog mengandung informasi tentang karakter, memberi gambaran kepada pembaca apa yang tokoh rasakan, apa yang ada di dalam pikiran mereka, apa yang memotivasi mereka untuk melakukan hal itu.
Dialog seharusnya dapat membantu pembaca memahami hubungan antar tokoh.
Saat aku menyusun manuskrip novelku: All is Fair in Love and Game, salah satu tantangan yang aku hadapi adalah bagaimana membuat dialog antara tokoh Rimba dan Anita berjalan dinamis. Diceritakan, kedua tokoh ini mempunyai kesamaan, juga perbedaan sifat. Rimba cenderung santai, suka sekali menggoda Anita yang punya karakter kaku dan reaktif. Rimba yang tertarik lebih dulu pada Anita, mencoba menggaet hati Anita, namun Anita yang tidak suka hubungan satu kantor, mencoba menghindari Rimba. Nah dari penjabaran itu, kebayang kan dialog apa yang harusnya aku susun agar hubungan mereka tampak dinamis.

Nah, gimana sih cara bikin dialog yang dinamis? Ini adalah beberapa tips dariku:
Nggak melulu dialog. Untuk membangun suasana, aku suka sekali menjabarkan apa yang tokoh itu lakukan saat sedang berbicara dengan tokoh yang lain. Bisa kebiasaannya atau suasana hatinya. Contoh: “Apa sih mau kamu?” Aku menyisir rambutku yang dibasahi peluh setelah pergulatanku dengan Kak Ronal memperebutkan keris sakti peninggalan Bapak. Ronal tertawa mendengar pertanyaan bodohku. “Harusnya kamu tahu apa mauku. Keris ini jelas diwariskan Bapak buatku. Kembalikan keris itu atau kali ini tubuhmu aku buat babak belur!”
Nggak berisi dialog yang singkat-singkat. Bayangkan jika kamu bertemu seseorang yang mengatakan hal ini ke kamu: “Cuacanya cerah ya.” Jawabanmu pastilah. “Iya.” Selesai. Tidak ada hal yang menggugah pembaca jika ia membaca dialog yang seperti itu. Namun coba bandingkan jika kamu sedikit memperbaiki dialog itu: “Tumben nih cuacanya cerah. Dari kemarin hujan turun terus. Aku terpaksa nggak ikut kelas bimbel.” Kemudian tokoh lain akan menjawab. “Kira-kira besok masih cerah kaya gini nggak, ya? Aku pengin ajak kamu pergi ke toko buku setelah pulang bimbel.” Tentu saja dialog yang bertele-tele juga tidak bagus apalagi dialog itu tidak mengandung informasi yang berguna untuk pembaca. Jadi pintar-pintarlah menyusun dialog yang tidak pendek, juga tidak bertele-tele. Caranya? Tetap berlatih.
Dialog tidak melulu lancar. Pernah nggak sih kamu mau ngomong sesuatu, tapi berusaha mengungkapkan apa yang ada di dalam pikiranmu agar tersampaikan ke lawan bicaramu. Seperti jeda atau eksklamasi em, eh, oh ... Menambahkan eklamasi juga nggak buruk kok. Misal: “Mas Pram, ada ... ada yang perlu aku bicarakan sama kamu. Kalau ... kamu nggak sibuk sama kerjaan. Bisa?” Coba kamu baca dialog itu, ada sesuatu keraguan yang ingin diungkapkan tokoh itu kepada lawan bicaranya, Mas Pram. Apa yang membuat tokoh itu ragu? Bisa jadi pembaca akan dibuat penasaran dengan dialog yang kamu buat.
Nggak perlu memaksa kalimat dialog jadi kata-kata yang instagramable untuk dikutip. Tbh, I found it a lot in books. Rasanya membuat caption dengan kata-kata instagramable jadi sesuatu yang viral dan booming ya. Ada perasaan senang jika kalimat yang kita susun disebar ke seluruh sosmed, namun apakah kalimat itu jadi dialog yang believable jika itu diucapkan oleh tokoh?
Show don’t tell. Adalah mantra sekalligus momok yang menakutkan bagi penulis. Jujur aku sering terjebak dalam hal ini. Bahkan ini adalah salah satu highlight revisi novelku oleh editor. Because it’s easier to tell than show how character feels and needs. Deskribsikan saja apa yang karakter itu rasakan. Darah berdesir merangkak hingga ke wajahnya, Eda tidak sanggup melawan gejolak yang berdentum di dadanya. “Bahkan kamu sekalipun nggak minta maaf soal sikap kurang ajarmu itu?” Dari dialog itu kita bisa simpulkan kan jika karakter Eda sedang marah.
Minimalisir penggunaan tag. “Kamu mau ikut?” tanyaku. ‘Kataku, ujarnya, teriaknya ... adalah tag yang sering dipakai oleh penulis untuk menjabarkan kalimat. Bukannya nggak boleh, tapi jika terus-terusan menggunakan tag seperti itu, pembaca pasti akan bosan. Ini pun jadi salah satu catatan revisiku kala itu, dari situ aku pun belajar untuk mengurangi penggunaan tag.
Baca dialogmu keras-keras. Aku sering melakukan ini setelah membuat sebuah kalimat. Dengan membacanya keras-keras, kamu bisa mencoba apakah kalimatmu efektif atau believable.

Cerita Terbaru di Wattpad: Ambyar!
Ide cerita ini begitu spontan, tidak ada persiapan khusus, tidak seperti biasanya harus menyusun karakter secara detil dan juga plot cerita, murni karena aku ingin membuat cerita yang simpel tapi mengena. Karena terinspirasi dari lagu-lagu Didi Kempot dan mengingat cerita sedih sesepu yang ditinggal nikah pacarnya, akhirnya cerita ini dibuat. Sengaja aku memberi judul Ambyar! yang dalam KBBI artinya tercerai berai, pas dengan tema ceritanya. Jadi, inilah Ambyar! sebuah cerita komedi-tragedi, yang kisahnya begitu dekat dengan kita.
Sinopsis:
Impian Gara dan Amel untuk hidup bersama dalam ikatan pernikahan seketika pupus saat kedua orang tua Amel memaksanya putus! Tenggelam dalam kegalauan, Gara bergabung dengan sohib ambyar, komunitas para patah hati untuk mencari ketenangan diri. Dapatkah Gara mendapat ketenangan batin saat ia menyadari jika patah hatinya tidak sendiri?

Menulis untuk Tipe Introvert Sepertiku
Aku kira dengan punya buku terbitan penerbit mayor, segalanya lebih mudah. Tapi nyatanya aku keliru, butuh usaha dan kerja keras agar bukuku bisa stand out di antara ratusan buku yang lain, yang tentu saja lebih bagus dan eye-catchy dibandingkan dengan bukuku. Sebagai orang yang sangat introvert, aku cenderung pemalu. Pemalu berpendapat di media sosial, malu memasarkan cerita sendiri. Hal ini didukung keenggananku aktif di sosial media. Hanya sebagai pengamat saja, tanpa mau berkontribusi. Padahal dulu, sebagai admin sosial media salah satu komunitas bola, aku pernah menyaring banyak pengikut dan belajar membuat konten yang menarik di Twitter. Sekarang kemana kemampuan itu pergi?
Akhir-akhir ini aku menyadari, menjadi dikenal akan mempermudah mengenalkan karya. Itulah yang aku pikirkan sekarang. Melihat banyaknya fenomena buku yang diterbitkan dari aplikasi wattpad yang telah dibaca berjuta-juta kali, nyatanya lebih laris bak kacang goreng. Ada rasa iri, lebih karena ... kenapa aku tidak bisa seperti mereka yang mampu menyentuh hati pembaca lewat media apapun. Sepertinya aku harus banyak belajar untuk lebih membuka diri.

Terbitnya All is Fair in Love and Game
Kemarin malam, adikku tiba-tiba mengirimkan sebuah foto, sambil menulis pesan: Mbak, bukumu sudah ada di rak buku Gramedia.
Kontan aku langsung mengecek foto-fotonya, benar saja ... bukuku sudah terpajang di sana.
Reaksi pertama, euforia. Yes! Akhirnya bukuku udah sampai di seluruh kota di Indonesia.
Reaksi selanjutnya, tiba-tiba saja tubuh menggigil kedinginan. Bayangan orang-orang secara luas dapat membaca hasil tulisanku, sungguh bikin badan meriang. Alhasil, tadi malam badan jadi K.O.
Mungkin sebagian menganggap jika reaksiku berlebihan. “Ah, baru satu buku aja udah menggigil kau kedinginan.” Tapi bagi yang menantikan sejak lama impiannya terwujud, sesungguhnya ini adalah reaksi yang wajar. Dimulai menulis di usia delapan tahun, baru sebelas tahun kemudian, bukuku layak bertengger di rak-rak toko buku. Rasa haru dan bangga pada pencapaian diri tentu saja meluap-luap.
Bahkan aku nggak ngerasa kecewa sedikit pun saat ke toko buku tadi siang, ternyata bukuku belum terpajang di depan rak utama, masih menyempil di deretan buku lama terbitan Elex. Ah, biarlah.
Kalau di Tangerang, bukuku masih nangkring di rak depan :P

My Novel Debut: All is Fair in Love and Game
Hello, Adhita’s here.
Seperti pada postingan di IG dan Twitter sebelumnya, aku mengumumkan jika pada bulan ini, novel debutku terbitan Elex Media berjudul “All is Fair in Love and Game” akan terbit. Finally! Setelah perjuangan panjang hampir 1,5 tahun menunggu, novel ini terbit juga.
Dimulai dari akhir tahun 2017, setelah menyelesaikan Le Canele, aku sebenarnya memutuskan rehat sejenak dari dunia menulis, sebelum akhirnya kembali melanjutkan menulis. Tapi tampaknya Muse sedang berbaik hati. Di akhir tahun 2017, ide menulis datang lagi. Kali ini bergenre citylite romance, drama romantis ala ala kota urban. Hingga pada bulan April 2018, aku nekat mengirimkannya ke penerbit Elex Media. Kenapa memilih Elex Media? Karena sesungguhnya aku begitu mengagumi novel terbitan Elex Media. Ada beberapa novel terbitan mereka yang menjadi favoritku. Karena tema yang aku usung juga sejalan dengan terbitan buku mereka, maka aku memutuskan mengirim ke sana. Mungkin inilah yang namanya jodoh. Pada akhir bulan November 2018, mereka memberitahu jika novel yang aku kirim diterima. Rasanya seperti nggak percaya saat editor Elex Media, Mbak Nindya, mengatakan sudah masuk waiting list. Selanjutnya, naskah direvisi. Dari proses revisi inilah aku belajar banyak hal, dari pemilihan diksi, pengembangan plot, dan lain-lain. Proses inilah yang membantuku untuk terus tumbuh dan mengasah kemampuan menulis. Selama ini aku mengira teknik menulisku baik-baik saja, aku punya bakat menulis. Tapi aku sadar jika aku jauh dari kata sempurna. Aku masih harus belajar dan berbenah.
Jadi begitulah, sepertinya aku membuat kaget banyak orang saat aku mengumumkan novel debutanku ini akan terbit. Terima kasih kepada banyak pihak yang telah membantuku juga menyemangatiku untuk terus menulis, dan percaya suatu saat nanti aku bisa menerbitkan bukuku. Rasanya seperti di awang-awang, sebentar lagi bukuku akan bertengger di jajaran rak di toko buku.
Dan aku nggak sabar membagikan kisah cinta Anita dan Rimba ke kalian...

The Art of Creating Believable Character
Hello, Adhita’s here. Kali ini aku akan memulai writing series, membahas dunia penulisan, untuk seri pertama, aku mulai dengan topik: The Art of Creating Believable Character.
Menciptakan karakter tokoh merupakan salah satu langkah awal dalam menyusun manuskrip cerita. Tokoh adalah penggerak cerita, bagaimana cerita itu bergulir, arah dan tujuan serta ending, merupakan tugas dari tokoh yang kita ciptakan. Membuat karakter tokoh terlihat mudah, namun justru ini adalah salah satu bagian dari sulitnya menulis. Bagaimana menciptakan tokoh yang susah dilupakan dan dicintai oleh pembaca dan terasa dekat atau relateable, tugas penulis untuk meramunya.
Tapi pernah kalian membaca sebuah buku dan menemukan tokoh yang karakternya terasa susah sekali dicerna? Atau merasa karakter tokoh ini tidak konsisten? Kamu merasa karakter tokoh itu mustahil ada di dunia. Padahal, salah satu indikator fiksi yang baik adalah bagaimana cerita fiksi terasa seperti non fiksi.
Salah satu contoh, aku pernah membaca sebuah novel bergenre romance-religi, dimana salah satu tokoh utamanya adalah seseorang yang mempunyai kharisma, santun, baik, cerdas, bersahaja, mempunyai paras menawan, dan alim. Semua nyaris digambarkan sempurna, bahkan saking sempurnanya sehingga tidak ada cacat dari sang tokoh utama. Pernah menemukan tokoh ini di dunia nyata? Bisa jadi iya, tapi apakah terasa relateable? Bisa jadi tidak.
Atau pernah membaca sebuah cerita dimana tokoh utamanya sangat keren, populer di sekolah, digandrungi kaum hawa, tapi punya sifat dingin dan ketus, di sisi lain punya sifat penyayang? Suatu sifat yang kontras, bukan? Obsesif, tapi penyayang, kasar, tapi kadang lembut. Ketidakkonsistenan karakter dapat membuat bingung pembaca.
Nah, gimana sih bikin karakter yang believable?
Salah satu metode yang biasanya aku pakai dalam menciptakan karakter tokoh, adalah dengan membuat diagram empat, yang terdiri dari: positive traits, negative traits, goals, dan, obstacles.
Positive traits. Sifat-sifat baik yang dimiliki tokoh ciptaanmu. Tulis daftar sifat positifnya yang kamu lekatkan dalam tokoh ciptaanmu. Tidak hanya sekedar baik atau penyayang, tulis sedetilnya sifat positif apa yang ada di karaktermu. Semisal si A adalah pekerja keras, karena sejak kecil ia sudah yatim piatu sehingga ia harus bekerja sejak dini. A juga pandai mengatur keuangan karena ia harus rajin berhemat agar dapat bertahan hidup. A suka membantu orang lain karena ia tahu hidup itu susah.
Negative traits. Kebalikan dari sifat baik, seorang tokoh harusnya juga punya sifat negatif. Misalnya: A susah menolak permintaan orang lain, ia tidak bisa bilang tidak karena sifatnya yang suka membantu. A terkadang kikir terhadap diri sendiri. Ia jarang sekali memberi reward pada dirinya. Lebih mementingkan kebutuhan orang lain daripada dirinya sehingga membuat jengkel orang terdekatnya. Sifat positif dan negatif pada suatu tokoh akan membentuk goals atau tujuan nantinya.
Goals. Seorang tokoh tidak mungkin tidak mempunyai tujuan, sesuatu yang ia inginkan atau yang ingin ia dapatkan, bahkan yang inginkan hanyalah memakan sepiring nasi. Karena itu buat daftar tujuan atau keinginan tokoh ciptaanmu, apa yang ingin ia raih. Misal: A ingin sekali punya toko kelontong sendiri, ia ingin berjualan buku. Ia sudah menabung sejak lama sebagai modal menyewa sebuah kios.
Obstacles. Hidup tidak beriak jika semua keinginanmu tercapai. Tidak ada cerita yang menarik jika tokoh-tokohmu selalu mendapat apa yang mereka mau. Setelah menetapkan tujuan tokohmu, buat juga hambatan yang tokoh alami agar tujuannya tidak tercapai. Misal: A tidak dapat menolak saat tetangganya memohon pinjaman uang pada A. Padahal uang yang A kumpulkan akan ia pakai untuk menyewa kios. Karena sifatnya yang tidak enakan, A meminjam uangnya. Sialnya tetangga itu kabur setelah membawa lari uangnya. Rencananya untuk membuka kios buku hancur sudah. Ia tidak punya modal lagi untuk membuka kios buku.
Empat poin di atas dapat mempermudah penulis dalam menentukan karakter tokoh penggerak cerita, dan memperkecil peluang ketidak konsistenan dalam membuat karakter tokoh. Penulis pun lebih mudah membuat alur cerita, saat para tokoh 'diberi hak’ untuk membuat keputusan.

Lion King Live Action Review
Kami menyesal melihat lion King tadi malam. Bukan karena filmnya jelek, tapi kami telat 5 menit, lagu Life of Circle sudah hampir habis. Tapi beruntung masih bisa menyaksikan saat Simba ditahbiskan di Pride of Rocks.
Sebuah film klasik nan indah. Both animation version and live action. Aku termasuk tipe yang terbuka akan remake, mau versi apa saja, aku pasti bakal antusias menonton. Soal menikmati atau nggak nantinya, urusan belakangan. Dan aku benar-benar menikmati versi live actionnya.

Jon Favreau bukan orang asing membuat film di bidang live action CGI dan semacamnya. Sebelum menggarap Lion King, ia berhasil membuat Jungle Book (my another favorite movie) yang begitu apik nan epik. Kali ini ramuan Jon Favreau berhasil. Lion King versi Live Action begitu indah, aku suka detail yang disajikan, seperti menonton Natgeo, namun kali ini versi ada dramanya (perebutan tahta rimba)

Untuk segi cerita, versi live action emang plek ketiplek dengan versi animasi. Nggak ada yang berubah dalam segi cerita. Nggak masalah. Cerita Simba terlalu epik untuk diubah. Sebaliknya penonton akan disajikan dengan efek CGI yang begitu halus (kudos untuk tim!)
Ada yang bilang untuk versi live action, para tokohnya terkesan expressionless, tidak seekspresif versi animasinya. Imho, memang mau gimana lagi, versi live action dibuat sedetail dan semirip mungkin dengan creature asli. Jadi nggak mungkin seekspresif versi animasi. Tapi aku tetap ngerasa ada emosi di tiap scene versi live action. Ini karena kekuatan actor voice-nya yang kuat membawakan emosi karakternya.

By the way, tiap kali Mufasa ngomong, yang terbayang di benak adalah suara Darth Vader (ya pengisi suaranya sama kali!) Dan menanti-nanti saat Mufasa ngomong “Simba, I am your father...” Ha! But as you know, no one, not a single soul can beat James Earl Jones’s voice, he is a legendary!
Nah, sayang banget kalau karya selegenda Lion King terlewatkan begitu saja. Segera pesan tiket, dan tonton Lion King di bioskop kesayangan!

Menulis Seperti Olahraga, Berlatihlah!
Baru-baru ini seorang kawan dekat meminta saran, bagaimana sih menulis yang eye-catching, dibaca enak oleh semua orang. Sejujurnya aku agak bingung, tulisan yang enak dibaca itu yang seperti apa. Apakah harus penuh dengan kata-kata gaul? Ataukah harus disisipi kalimat-kalimat berbahasa Inggris yang which is sangat Jaksel sekali?
Aku pernah membaca sebuah artikel, menulis itu perlu berlatih, lebih baik menulis setiap hari, daripada harus menunggu waktu luang seperti akhir pekan, baru memulai menulis. Dengan menulis setiap hari, otot-otot melakukan pemanasan. Tunggu ... emang menulis perlu pemanasan? Dengan apa, memutar kepala ke kiri dan ke kanan? Tentu saja bukan! Otak perlu dilatih menyusun kalimat, yang tak hanya sekedar kumpulan kata, namun juga mempunyai makna.
‘Tapi aku nggak pernah menulis.’ Kawanku menimpali. Aku pun menjawab ‘memang kamu bikin caption instagram atau status di Facebook pakai mata batin?’ Pada dasarnya dan tanpa kita sadari, kita seringkali menulis. Hanya saja, kita seringkali tidak sadar bahwa menulis adalah kegiatan yang dekat dengan kehidupan sehari-hari. Yang dibutuhkan hanyalah melatih diri agar menulis bukanlah sesuatu kegiatan momok dan butuh kemampuan mumpuni. Cukup dengan mampu menyelesaikan kalimat bermakna, maka dimulailah petualang menulismu. Menulis ibarat olahraga, agar badanmu sehat, maka sering berlatihlah, agar kamu mahir menulis, maka menulislah!

Memulai Freelance
My life is upside and down since my latest post. My status turns from a single to married. Yes, I’m married. Life is surely unpredictable, I didn’t plan to get married last year.
So, hidup baru berumah tangga dimulai. Berperan jadi istri tentu bukan perkara mudah. Harus ada penyesuaian, mulai dari hidup yang awalnya hanya mikirin diri sendiri, sekarang ada orang lain yang perlu dipikirin. Perubahan terbesar adalah dari nggak bisa masak, sekarang jadi bisa, walaupun masakan yang dimasak hanyalah masakan jenis oseng-osengan saja hehe.
By the way, I will share my husband’s experience as freelance illustrator. Yeah, my husband is full time illustrator. He has studio, name is Bigbann Studio. Menerima pesanan berbagai macam ilustrasi dari background, character, weapon design, book cover, etc. Sebelumnya, Bani bekerja di studio milik sendiri di rumah mertua. Karena berbagai pertimbangan, akhirnya diputuskan, studio pindah di rumah sendiri, dan memulai freelance. Bani punya beberapa pegawai yang akhirnya juga ikut jejaknya, menjadi seorang freelance.
Bekerja freelance tentu punya tantangan tersendiri. Jam kerja yang tidak menentu, terlebih lagi bekerja di rumah sendiri yang lebih nyaman dan rawan godaan untuk bermalas-malasan. Apalagi hawa Malang yang akhir-akhir ini jadi lebih dingin dari sebelumnya. Hampir 17 derajat! Beberapa hari setelah memutuskan freelance, Bani masih struggle beradaptasi dari ritme kerja dari yang pasti, menjadi tidak menentu. Jam kerja bebas, apakah produktivitas makin berkurang? Memang perlu siasat agar tetap produktif, walaupun kita punya kebebasan mengatur waktu kerja. Ada beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan ketika memutuskan freelance.
Hal pertama yang memang harus dipersiapkan untuk freelance adalah lingkungan kerja. Ya, walaupun bekerja di rumah, tetap saja membuat tempat kerja senyaman mungkin adalah suatu keharusan. Alhasil dua hari sebelum memulai freelance, kami bersih-bersih rumah, menyiapkan ruangan khusus untuk meletakkan berbagai peralatan penunjang pekerjaan, mulai dari meja, kursi, komputer, alat gambar, dll. Kami sengaja merancang ruang tengah menjadi meja kerja bersama.
Tak kalah penting adalah menyiapkan daftar pekerjaan yang harus diselesaikan, menentukan deadline, hingga mengatur siapa saja yang harus menyelesaikan garapan tersebut. Semuanya ditulis rapi di sebuah papan, agar lebih mudah dilihat. Menentukan deadline sangat penting. Hanya karena memutuskan freelance, lantas mau leha-leha? Tentu saja nggak! Deadline harus tetap ada agar lebih disiplin dalam waktu.
Mengatur ritme kerja juga penting. Beberapa hari freelance, Bani mencari waktu yang pas dia bekerja. Dia mengatur kapan harus bekerja, istirahat, dan bepergian. Mana waktu paling produktif, mana jam-jam yang tidak produktif. Semuanya diatur dan diadaptasi selama seminggu penuh. Biasanya Bani memulai kerjanya setelah shalat subuh. Rehat sebentar untuk sarapan (jangan menunda asupan gizi di pagi hari!), rehat saat jam makan siang, mulai lagi bekerja hingga malam. Biasanya aku mengingatkan dia untuk rehat maksimal hingga pukul sembilan malam. Jika pun terpaksa lembur, setidaknya tidak melebihi jam 12 malam. Waktu istirahat penting, agar stamina tetap terjaga, metabolisme tubuh lancar, dan fit.
Komitmen adalah kunci utama. Tanpa komitmen, hal-hal yang aku sebutkan nggak akan ada artinya. Komitmen tetap produktif walaupun tidak ada yang mengikat dan mengawasi pekerjaan.

A Quiet Place, Sebuah Debut Comercial yang Apik dari John Krasinski
Ingatkah karakter Jim dari The Office, si sweet boy salesman kini jadi sutradara. Sebenarnya sudah lama John Krasinski membuat film namun baru kali ini filmnya berbudget besar dan didistribusi di berbagai tempat.
Sejak melihat trailernya, saya tahu jika ini bukan jenis film yang dinikmati oleh ramai-ramai, tapi membutuhkan ketenangan. Benar saja, film ini mampu membuat para penontonnya diam ditempat dan menahan napas, bahkan melupakan kenikmatan pop corn yang biasanya dijadikan teman menonton. Semua detil suara terekam apik di film ini, seperti suara desiran angin, tapak kaki, air yang mengalir, semua suara itu terasa detil sekaligus memberikan ketegangan yang menajam.
Film ini berpusat pada satu keluarga yang menjadi survivor kepungan alien yang memburu lewat suara. Satu keluarga ini pada akhirnya beradaptasi, menjalani kehidupan yang ‘bisu’, nyaris tanpa suara. Apakah kehidupan mereka yang tenang itu akan selamanya tenang? Mungkin ada baiknya dengan mencari tahu dengan menontonnya langsung.
Film ini dibuka dengan cerita yang tidak bertele-tele, semua penyebab kenapa invansi alien bisa terjadi memang tidak dijabarkan secara detil, namun penonton akan tahu, dampak apa yang terjadi karena invasi tersebut. Cerita ini memang tidak melulu berbumbu horor, namun disisipi drama keluarga yang pas dan tidak terlalu eneg, membuat penonton tidak hanya tegang, tapi juga trenyuh dengan kisah mereka. Emily Blunt seperti biasa, cantik namun powerful, begitu juga dengan sang suami, yang juga suami asli dari Emily Blunt, John Krasinski yang tampak gahar dengan brewok tebalnya. A Quiet Place merupakan film pembuka di Bulan April yang apik sekaligus epik.

Dunkirk Review
Eh udah lama nggak nulis di mari.
Tadi udah janji bakal kasih review Dunkirk, biasanya nulis di note trus di screen shoot, tapi karena blog udah menjamur karena ‘sering’ posting gini, makanya sekalian deh ya.
Bisa dibilang film Dunkirk (bacanya Dankerk ya, ingat. Bukan Dunkirk boss) adalah film berbeda dari seorang Nolan. Menikmatinya pun juga berbeda dari film-film Nolan sebelumnya. Dunkirk ini nggak perlu mikir, cukup diam menikmati suguhan cerita dan scene yang diambil apik oleh kamera IMAX. Sajian cerita yang disajikan juga sederhana, tentang prajurit Inggris yang ingin pulang. Tapi bukan Nolan namanya kalo yang sederhana dikemas dengan brilian. Jika diperhatikan dengan seksama, Nolan menggunakan alur maju dan mundur. Jika tujuannya bener-bener nonton pasti bakal merhatiin deh.
Untuk karakter sendiri juga nggak punya tokoh sentral, semua tokoh punya peran masing-masing, namun saling melengkapi jalinan cerita dan punya kaitan satu sama lain. Ini bukan jenis film perang yang biasa kamu lihat. Bukan tegang ala Black Hawk Down ataupun Saving Private Ryan, atau yang mengharu biru seperti Tears of the Sun, ataupun kocak layaknya Tropic Thunder, ini film yang berbeda. Dibuka dengan adegan tegang, ketegangan sendiri dibangun secara perlahan, dan bisa bikin mikir lebih dalam tentang efek dari perang itu sendiri, bagaimana kekerasan dan kematian secara tak langsung mempengaruhi kehidupan para tentara.
Siapa scene stellar di sini? Nggak ada yang khusus. Banyak yang bilang Harry Styles tampil menawan, tapi menurutku perannya lumayan oke. Justru sih sepanjang nonton film nggak pernah berkedip lihat Fionn Whitehead yang idungnya lancip bener kayak prosotan senaputera. Selain dihiasi pemain-pemain anyar, Dunkirk ini juga dilengkapi dengan jajaran aktor veteran, sebut saja Gilderoy Lockart, Jarvis, Scarecrow dan Bane (Batman Reunion).
Nonton apa nggak? Iya. Kalau punya uang. Kalo nggak, kesiaaaan deh. Dunkirk akan sangat sayang jika dilewatkan.
*BTW film ini minim CGI, jadi kebayang kan kerennya...
Ini dedek Fionn yang idungnya ya Allah lancip bener.
