Speaking of Hamilton, it’s super fucked up the reputation it gets because of some of its more immature fans. Like, yeah, okay, there are people out there that are treating the founding fathers like “uwu cinnamon roll characters” instead of the actual real life people they were but that’s….not the show’s fault? The show does a better job of showing them as flawed human beings than MOST historical media, which tend to glorify them and completely ignore all flaws and shortcomings.

But more than that, it’s fucked up that the show is starting to get a bad reputation or be regarded as “cringey”. This is a show that shattered records and set milestones in theatre, and it is a show that is like 99% non-white. It’s a show that was written BY a man of colour specifically to CREATE more roles for performers of colour in an industry where he always felt there was little to no room for them. Can we not discredit that or its importance just because some teens on tumblr don’t know how to be normal about a musical they like?

Normally I’d leave my commentary in the tags but it’s also noteworthy for legitimizing the hip hop musical on Broadway. I’ve always maintained that it is disappointing that it needed to be based on the whitest subject in the world to get a hit hip-hop musical to be palatable to a broadway audience, but here we are. And hopefully it will lead to more rap and hip hop integration into the musical landscape, only this time based on a way better subject matter.

This isn’t so much a justification for the musical, I guess I’m just trying to convey the landscape at the time. Broadway is just kinda…. elitist, white, rich, theater & musical fans are diverse but the accessibility of broadway in particular? Is pretty crap. So getting something diverse to resonate with that audience is trickier, that’s why you get so many musicals about revolution that always end up reaffirming the status quo, because the idea of revolution feels good but the audience doesn’t want to actually be challenged.

And there are definitely critiques that should be listened to: the fact that LMM is a Latinx man writing rap (largely Black genre than orginiated with Black people), the fact that it upholds the American Revolution as a story about immigrants when 1) not everyone who came to the United States came by choice & 2) it paints americans as immigrants and not thieves/handwaves the fact that the land was stolen from the Native Americans, & other anti-black criticisms of the show. Oh and how fans behaved, of course. So we shouldn’t dismiss any of this as ppl just making fun of the fans for being embarrassing or being overly negative because criticism absolutely warrants existing and we shouldn’t keep rose-tinted glasses on for all the good ppl want to believe the show has done, and we shouldn’t give it a free pass because it’s diverse. But the show deserves all of it. All it’s praise, all its criticism.

Hamilton has always been at its strongest when it’s being interpreted metaphorically, but that doesn’t mean the other ways to read it aren’t kinda unsavory…
