Marquise Daydream
Sly groggily hobbled over to the buzzing coffee machine, pulling the pot free and pouring himself a cup. The sensation of the drink hitting the cup immediately, unpleasantly startled him, forcing him to be a bit more awake than he had wanted to be and leaving the tips of his fingers on high alert.
"Everything alright, pal?"
Murray had turned to watch Sly when he had begun to stir from his nap. Turning to face him now, he studied his recently awoken friend and recognized his struggle.
"Yeah, it's alright, Murray. Just grabbing some coffee before we get to it. Say, where's Bentley?"
"Oh, he said he was out for some reconna-... Some, uh, some recon before you went out for the job."
"Right. I guess there's some more time to spare, then."
Sly sat himself next to Murray, eyeing the monitor keeping track of Bentley's position and binocucom feed. He stared at it idly, letting his focus wander, and his mind follow in turn.
Breaking the silence, Murray leaned over to Sly, who didn't seem to respond.
"Something on your mind?"
Nearly spilling his coffee, Sly gave Murray a look, but nodded after falling back into his unrested attitude.
"There was something. I've been having this dream lately. It's been bothering me."
"Oh, the guru taught me all about dreams! Lay it on me, buddy."
Sly smirked as Murray perked up, happy to have a way to ease into the night he'd just woken up to.
"Like just about every night, we're planning a heist. Well, I say 'we', but really, it's just me. I case the joint, and security is always tight. Total lockdown. Even for me, it's a dangerous job. Eventually, I get in there, and I'm standing right in front of this diamond. The rock is about the size of a fist, and it's cut into this beautiful shape, too. I've never seen anything like it. But, whenever I go for it, I feel like it's pushing me away. I can feel this, pressure, closing in, I assume it's the guards, but I can never really bring myself to follow through with the steal. I leave a card every time, but in the moment I wake up, I almost have to wonder if it's worth showing up at all just to walk away empty handed."
Sly takes a sip of his coffee, it having cooled adequately in the time he took to lay it all down for his partner. Murray mulled over it for a moment, and made a gesture of understanding, a smile wide across his face.
"It sounds to me like you've got some kind of unresolved feelings holding you back from something."
"Oh really?"
"Trust me on this one. Maybe, like, that pressure you're feeling is the pressure to perform, right? You're Sly Cooper. Everybody knows you, knows us. It's not like you to mess up; at least, not in a way that everyone finds out about."
Murray audibly pauses long enough for the two of them to let out a light laugh as he continues.
"But that pressure can come from you, too. If you feel like you aren't making it your best, you won't feel right taking that diamond. And maybe that's holding you back from taking it even if it's what you're looking for, so you hesitate. Maybe that calling card of yours is more of a promise to return than it is a big bundle of unresolved feelings."
Sly narrows his brow and, without turning to face Murray, says something under his breath.
"And if that diamond were a person?"
Murray sees Sly's expression and softens his voice a little, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Well, there's surely something there to view someone as a diamond. I remember one time Bentley was going on and on about them before another heist of ours. How they're made of tough stuff, and that they're molded under the pressure of a thousand suns, packed tighter and tighter until they become an unbreakable hunk! Or, uh, something like that. But, he also said that they can be cut at just the right angle that they'll come apart, and that that's how we get them stuffed onto little rings and bracelets and the like. Maybe you're feeling that same pressure that this someone is. Maybe you think that, like, they're all complete, but that you haven't proven yourself to measure up yet. It's like, you're both going through this struggle, but you can't see yourself as being that, uh, solid, I guess... "
Murray had obviously lost the trail a bit, but to Sly, it all made sense. He smiled, and touched his brother's hand, now turning to face him.
"Thanks, big guy. I think your master taught you well."
"You can thank him when you see him. For now, just be sure you don't get cold feet like that on this heist, alright?"
The two of them laughed to themselves, and settled back in. It was gonna be a long night, and a longer day until they found a place to hide out. Until then, there would be plenty to keep them occupied. Perhaps things had become just a little more clear.

Kiss from a Rose
“For me? That isn’t like you, Inspector.”
Sly lowered himself further from the windowsill, turning his head in an attempt to rectify the enticing image before him that, due to his position, was inverted.
“Oh, I know it’s not, ringtail. Don’t go expecting me to show you this kind of kindness on any other night.”
     “And what makes the occasion?”
“You helped me on that last job. Remember the florist?”
“Oh, I remember. I’m still looking for a couple of those thorns.”
Carmelita held back from a few levities as to maintain the mood, but made sure to stow them away in the back of her mind.
“Anyway, the special flower they were producing just bloomed; as a reward, all of us who worked the case were given a cutting to try and grow our own. I haven’t got much of a green thumb, so, I thought that maybe you could take better care of it.”
“And what makes you say that?” Sly let himself smirk. He was at a loss, but the idea that she was thinking of him was enough. Though, he didn’t precisely understand how she would expect him to take care of something so fragile in a ... transitory home environment like his own.
“Well... maybe it would be more appropriate to say that it reminded me of you. It’s a blue rose. Do you know what that symbolizes?”
“I can certainly see that it’s handsome. For a flower. It’s in my color, too.”
“Ha-ha, very funny... It’s meant to symbolize something mysterious. Ephemeral. Blue roses don’t exist in nature, so to say that you’ve found one... it’s like grabbing hold of a cloud. It’s elusive, and maybe not quite what one may think.”
“That’s high praise, coming from a beat cop such as yourself.”
Carmelita had to let a smile through, trying her best to cover her face with her hand as her teeth flashed.
“But now, there’s a one of a kind flower sitting right here in front of me. We’ve finally found a way to harness it, out of all the experimentation and trials and breeding. It’s all led down through a lineage of beautiful roses into a one of a kind flower. And now, I can hold it right here between my fingers. It’s so much closer to reality than I’ve dreamed.”
For once, Sly kept quiet. He had lost whether or not she was talking about the flower or still going on about his rare qualities, but it was certainly keeping his attention. Carmelita blushed and turned her head, reaching the flower out to Sly for him to take.
“Anyway, I just thought that you’d like to have it. You’ve been on good behavior, and I appreciate your help. Get home safe, okay? Tell the boys that I said hi.”
“Thanks, Carmelita. I’ll be sure to let them know.”
Sly took the flower in his cane and flipped back up onto the windowsill, scaling up onto the roof. He reached into his thigh-pack and took out one of his calling cards, removing a pin and threading it through the rose and into his top.
“Ephemeral, huh? Well, I do like to make myself scarce.”
Breaking into a sprint, Sly felt that he understood more about Carmelita. Maybe he understood more about himself. There wasn’t much more to it than that.
Carmelita looked over from her desk, past all the work, and over to a pot sitting across from it all, pulling it onto her lap. Another cutting rested in the damp earth, growing strongly and letting off a light fragrance. She held it right there, close to her. In her own two arms.

Sirens
Steady screams of sirens used to soothe her. It sounds absurd. Even silly, But that sound signified strength. Order. A shrieking that scared the world’s sinners A screech stabbing into the shadiest shadows. The strident song of justice.
Lately, though, something’s lacking. The lights, the loud hollering, Leave her feeling lonesome, almost melancholy. What she had earlier loved She’s no longer sure she even likes. The rallying call has become a lament.
Yet the question haunts her: why? Yesterday’s youthful enthusiasm gives way To today’s conflicted yearning. Years have taught her that a chase begun Is a chase soon ended. Oh, to abandon the yellow yowls of sirens And submit to the siren song Of sharing a quiet, yielding yawn.

Family.
This was, technically, Elyna’s second ever Día de Muertos.
That first autumn had bled into winter in a blur. Things in the house had been hectic, and tense. Understandably tense. Justifiably tense. Even without the exceptional circumstances, the ghost of a murderer hanging over this lovely home, it was easy for traditions to slide a little. It had taken a lot of careful effort to “adopt” her.
Oops. She was doing it again. The thing her therapist had pointed out where she didn’t classify the things that happened to her as real, because she didn’t see herself as real, but everything she felt was more than real so it only made sense to drop that habit and accept herself.
It had taken a lot of effort to adopt her. Yes.

SLYFOX WEEK DAY 3 BOTTLE
No story for this one, but when I was younger I believed that no matter how far away you were, a message in a bottle would always reach the ones you loved. Always
