Makes sense to add a significant digit here if your last significant digit is 1 or 2 - commonly done in physics to avoid this kind of deterioration of precision when multiplying by constants close to 10^(n+1/2).
Your example of 5 vs 8 feet in tags prompted me to do some research in what factors result in what distance in the initial 1SD measurements conflated to the same number. For distance of 1, all factors between 1.1875 (9.5/8) and 9 4/9 (8.5/9 * 10^1) conflate two numbers like 8 and 9. For distance of 2, the range is from 9.5/7 to 3.5/8 * 10 (from 1.357 to 4.375). For distance of 3, the range is very narrow, from 1.5/5 * 10 to 2.5/8 * 10 (from 3.0 to 3.125), so feet are officially the worst conversion for this purpose known to man.
Interestingly, the last range doesn't include sqrt(10) as I expected, although it comes very close. Hope you find it mildly interesting too.
outside of highly technical contexts, when converting between units there's a subtle risk of introducing "false precision". like, there's this old tumblr post saying like 500 miles sounds "more poetic" or something than 804.672 kilometers.
and it is true that 500 miles precisely equals 804.672 kilometers, but that conversion has introduced a level of precision that wasn't there in the original measurement! it would be less precise but more helpful to say 800 kilometers instead.
anyway I've been thinking a lot about the general problem of how exactly to decide what level of precision is appropriate for a conversion (assuming you're not in a context where you definitely always want the exact conversion). in particular, given one measurement given in feet, what metric unit should be used? I reckon that decimeters would work best (smaller than a foot by a large enough factor to give an accurate-enough conversion, but not so much smaller that they introduce too much false precision), but the problem is that decimeters aren't nearly "normal enough" of a unit to have the same vibes to metric users as things measured in feet do for imperial/us customary users.
so like, do you use centimeters rounded to the nearest ten, or meters with one digit after the decimal point? when exactly is one of these options better than the other? much to consider! I'd be interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this :)

Very true. I used to have a habit of lying down in my bed holding my smartphone above me and poking at the screen. I no longer have this habit, it has been replaced by elbow tunnel syndrome.
Frankly, my concern about younger generations switching to exclusively using smartphones for digital communication has less to do with computer literacy and more to do with the demonstrably harmful ergonomics of the smartphone form factor. I have an inkling that we're about to see a massive generational wave of RSI-related chronic disabilities as folks blow out every nerve and tendon from their elbows down by the time they're 25 trying to type on a touchscreen the size of a playing card.

After a couple months spent befriending a local stray, managed to get a collar on him! So hopefully I'll be able to take him to the vet soon. Haven't succeeded in washing the dirty boy though.
I'm very bad at dogs, unsure if I'm doing this right at all, but the plan is to leave the collar with him for some time so he gets used to it before using it to take him to the vet in an orderly manner. Someone tell me if this is a horrible plan, please.
(Unfortunately, I' can't be taking him home - small flat, two cats, and we're moving soon. But we've been feeding him good food and want to get his lame leg looked at).

Wait, Bee and Puppycat is adult audience animation? I thought that was like, a children's series about neurodivergence or somesuch.
Historically, the American animation industry has recognised only two types of cartoons aimed at adult audiences:
The animated sitcom
Martial arts action with tits and gore
I'm watching the Fionna and Cake miniseries right now, and I genuinely think we're witnessing the emergence of a third broadly accepted option: whimsical fantasy adventure in the mode of popular children's programming, except everyone is clinically depressed.

For a while in my life I legitimately considered moving to Germany. There’s multiple reasons I inevitably ended up staying in the US but one of the big ones was that one time when I was in Germany and wanted some salsa the closest thing I could find was basically just tomato sauce.

Oh! Huh, I never thought about that, but yeah, sequence concatenation is a lot like Cartesian product. I don't think programming languages do a lot of empty notation for operators like that. Obviously, string specialized languages like PEG and regex do, otherwise only Wolfram Mathematica using juxtaposition as multiplication comes to mind. It's kind of awkward to express an operator by writing nothing.*
* unless that operator is function application, then a lot of people are doing it
i'm curious to hear why you consider functions and strings to be numbers. semi-relatedly, do you have much knowledge of/interest in category theory?
functions are numbers because you can do math with them in the same way you can do math with numbers (ie function composition). strings are numbers because you can add them together and compare them to each other. it's all math it's all numbers
anyway I'm not that experienced with category theory in particular but I am a big fan of some of the categories category theory categorizes. those are numbers too I say

Actually your society is the freaks for shooting everything that moves and burning half your "nature reserves" every year so that upperclass dandies can eat leaded pheasant. North Americans are the well adjusted ones here, your country has become a desolate suburban lawn in island form

To be risque on the internet, it eludes me why, given a known abuser, narcissist and a systematic compulsive liar, people will get up in arms if someone's skeptical about their expressed gender identity, too. Buddy, they have no problems lying about their heritage, ethnicity, or biological species; why would I take what they say about their gender at face value? I don't think it's a double standard to assume most people self-report their gender accurately, but to drop this assumption in face of history of untruthfulness.

You can be diagnosed with gay, though. It is not considered a medical disorder, for very good reasons, but in theory, the diagnostic criteria are there, as much as it is for any other persistent state of mind. Psychiatry is real, you know. Also, the current understanding is that orientation is rather persistent in most adult people, so you can with a high probability guess someone’s orientation by doing psychiatric or even bodily assessment (measuring physical arousal is e.g. normal medical practice). Insofar as LGBT+ umbrella is meant to unite people shamed by the Default Configuration, I’m pretty sure Gay and Intersex are not as terribly far apart in terms of inclusion criteria as you make it out to be. If you personally don’t feel comfortable with that, it is entirely understandable, as there are differences, but trying to present it as uniquely morally correct is disingenuous.
INTERSEX IS NOT LGBT. IT’S A MEDICAL CONDITION. DON’T INCLUDE US IN YOUR COMMUNITY UNLESS WE ARE LGBT.
I AM LGBT AND INTERSEX. I AM NOT LGBT”QI…” THERE IS NO I. I AM SIMPLY LGBT. DON’T INCLUDE MY MEDICAL CONDITION INTO YOUR IDENTITY. YOU CANNOT BE DIAGNOSED WITH GAY. YOU CAN BE DIAGNOSED WITH INTERSEXISM. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE. WE HAVE OUR OWN COMMUNITY. STOP BEING SO INCLUSIVE. YOU’RE GONNA END UP INCLUDING FURRIES IF YOU INCLUDE US.

Okay, but... can you elaborate how to reach the product this is promoting? I am genuinely puzzled by the UI. Also, I disagree, the pirate clown is the best interface change in the last batch, at least stylistically.
The worst thing about the leering clown is that if it wasn't an ad it would be fucking hilarious. Capitalism really does ruin everything.

It’s fucking grim to me the way trans people will say detrans people were never really trans, that they and their doctors and their support group should’ve just dug a little deeper and they would’ve realized they’re cis. They just can’t empathize with detransitioners. They refuse to believe that every detransitioner felt exactly the way they do now.
I’d feel sick when people would call me she. I cried all night over my drama teacher calling me an actress instead of an actor. I couldn’t look at my naked body in the mirror without getting nauseous. I’d daydream about the day I could get my tits chopped off and spent hours researching the nearest doctors that would do it for me the second I turned 18. I’d argue about trans rights every day, online and off. I got such a rush of euphoria the first time I was able to cut my hair short I started crying in the salon.
I didn’t desist because those feelings were fake the whole time. There was no secret proof that I was cis that I or anyone else was missing. I felt exactly the way any other trans person did. There is no way to spot a future detransitioner. They are not cis people who decide to be trans on a whim and immediately regret it.
One day you’ll probably end up just like me, and you’ll get told from the children you try to warn that you were never really trans.

Okay, now we have one Tumblr poll versus another. Not to be mean, but where’s the evidence? Judging by your blog, you’re gender critical (?) - your audience likely HEAVILY skews gender-critical gays, but those are not the only “valid” gays even from a gender-critical point of view. A lot of gays and lesbians are pro-transition in theory, even when it doesn’t really affect their bedroom. Also, I like how the notion of reclaiming is framed as “homophobia”. This is literally begging the question.
Homophobia won

Wait, it’s an ad after all? Maybe my adblocker stopped something (duh), but I genuinely didn’t figure out what is it an ad for -- for me, it just changes the background to some sort of poster collage.

huge news: once you receive bytes over the wire on your computer, there's no way to prevent you from doing what you want with those bytes
the thing about adblock detection stuff is that for popular websites where the demand exists for an adblock it's such a losing battle. best case scenario for the corporation is that the adblock will be broken for maybe a week before someone circumvents it again and adds that to the public blocklist. there is no adblock detection method that's immune to the adblocker just lying to the website

Makes him look slimy? The man is, I’d say, slightly beyond slimy. He paid a crazy communist sniper to kill a competitor. Evrart is a character that really pushes the question of “ends justifying the means” with basically all of his existence.
🔥disco elysium :)
anyone who played the game and had the takeaway 'oh evrart is an evil nasty guy and joyce is a lovely friendly lady, this game must be pretty anti-union' needs to play the game again
